Preemie massage study
For preterm infants, massage may be a magical touch.
Several studies show that preterm newborns receiving massage therapy (three 15-minute sessions daily for five to 10 days) increase their weight gain by 31 percent to 47 percent, said Tiffany Field, director of the Touch Research Institutes, University of Miami School of Medicine.
Studies suggest that massage works by increasing body-building proteins, increasing hormones for better food absorption and by decreasing the stress hormone cortisol, Field reported in Current Directions in Psychological Science, a publication of the American Psychological Society.
