Heritage day Sept. 29
The Newton Falls Sportsman's Club will host a 2000 Thanksgiving In The Woods American Heritage Day program at Lake Milton State Park on Sept. 29.
There will be a weekend encampment of buckskinners and re-enactors with several cannon crews on hand with cannon displays. Heritage Day will feature an all-day arts and crafts area with demonstrations and sales of items.
There will be buckskinner contests as well as firebuilding, logsplitting, knifethrowing and hawk throwing competitions for men and women.
There will be a community covered-dish dinner at 5 p.m. Those attending should bring a covered dish or dessert and table service. Program sponsors will provide a roasted venison, deep-fried turkeys, and other wild game dishes.

Dock lottery set
COLUMBUS -- Boat owners wishing to rent public boat docks at Ohio state park lakes for the 2002 season have until Aug. 31 to enter lottery drawings used to select renters for available docks. Application forms are now available for the special lotteries, conducted by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to allocate its popular state park dock facilities.
Lottery drawings will be held at Alum Creek, Buck Creek, Buckeye Lake, Cleveland Lakefront, Deer Creek, Delaware, Dillon, Grand Lake St. Marys, Lake Milton, Mosquito Lake, Paint Creek, Rocky Fork, Salt Fork and West Branch state parks. Lottery application forms are available at state park offices or by mail. Completed forms may be submitted in person or sent to the park office by certified mail/return receipt. Forms must be received in the respective park offices by 5 p.m. Aug. 31. Drawings will be held in September.

Marsh dedication
OAK HARBOR, OHIO -- Lake Erie marshlands in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan will be officially dedicated as a Regional Shorebird Reserve on Aug. 18, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife.
The Lake Erie marshlands are only the second such reserve in the Midwest designated by the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network. Northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan marshes are important migratory resting and feeding habitat for shorebirds. Some 75,000 shorebirds visit these marshes annually on northward and southward migration treks.
The public is invited to attend dedication activities at sites in Ohio and Michigan. The events begin at 9 a.m. with a shorebird walk at the Migratory Bird Center at the Magee Marsh State Wildlife Area.
PENNSYLVANIA
Licenses sold out
MERCER, Pa. -- Mercer County has sold out its 2001 allocation of 7,200 anterless deer state hunting licenses. Ginny Steese Richardson, county treasurer, said her office sold all of its licenses in just two days this week and had nearly 1,200 additional requests that will have to be returned to hunters.
The state, which has extended the anterless season this fall, also reduced he number of licenses available in many areas, including Mercer County, Richardson said. Her office had nearly 9,000 licenses to sell last year but saw the number cut by 1,750 this year by the Pennsylvania Game Commission, she said.
Other counties that have exhausted their license supply include Carbon; Clinton; Elk; Juniata; Snyder; Somerset; Union; and Venango.
