Deaf association conference is this weekend at Avalon Inn

The Miss Deaf Ohio Pageant will be Friday night at Lakeview High School in Cortland.
HOWLAND -- The Ohio Association of the Deaf's 22nd biennial conference is Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Avalon Inn.
The conference theme is "Come Soar with Us ... Ohio Deaf Children Are Our Future: Deaf Adults Are Our Guides."
Workshops: Workshop topics are "Can Children be Taught American Sign Language Literature? Yes!," "An Interpreter Education: Issues to Consider," "Eight Parables of Leadership," "Family Literacy," and "Cochlear Implants ... What Does This Mean for the Deaf Community."
The Miss Deaf Ohio Pageant will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Lakeview High School in Cortland, where the new Miss Deaf Ohio will be crowned by Miss Deaf America.
Banquet: There will be an awards banquet Saturday night at Avalon Inn, where entertainment will be provided by Ken Glickman, a deaf comedian and magna cum laude graduate of Dartmouth College.
From 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, attorney Howard Rosenbaum and Karen Aquilar of the Mid-West Center for Law and the Deaf will conduct a workshop on the "Legal Rights of People Who are Deaf and Hard-Of-Hearing." They will discuss the American Disabilities Act and the mitigating measure cases that look at the definition of disability; the Olmstead case that addressed isolation of people with disabilities; and the Garrett case that deals with the State's immunity to lawsuit.
Sign language/voice interpreters will be on hand to assist deaf participants during question-and-answer sessions. Deaf students ages 17 and under must be accompanied by a parent. For more information, contact Kristine Wallace, Community Center for the Deaf, Boardman (330) 726-8686.
