SHARPSVILLE Borough council

Four seats are up for election in the race for Sharpsville Borough Council in the May 15 primary. Only two Republicans are on the ballot, Roy Wise and Alice Connelly, so both appear assured of winning their party nominations. Six Democrats are vying for that party's four nominations, including the four incumbents whose seats are up. Two candidates, incumbent Robert K. Piccirilli and John D. Alfredo, did not respond to The Vindicator's request for information. * denotes incumbent. The other Democratic candidates are:
GUY F. MODERELLI*
Age: 46.
Home: 38 Line St.
Employment: Store manager at Hermitage Shop N' Save.
Education: Graduate of Sharpsville High School; attended Pennsylvania State University.
Family: Wife, Beverly; three adult children.
Experience: Borough councilman for 17 years; 30 years' business and supervisory experience have aided him in the areas of finance and contract negotiations.
Priority: To offer borough residents the best possible services at the best possible price and to continue to provide open, honest government.
JACK CARDWELL*
Age: 50.
Home: 418 Pierce Ave.
Employment: District representative for the Pennsylvania Lottery.
Education: Graduate of Sharpsville High School; bachelor's degree from Slippery Rock State University.
Family: Wife, Patty.
Experience: Two stints as a borough councilman, from 1976 to 1984 and 1994 to present.
Priority: Examining the possibility of tax rebates next year as Mercer County has mandated that property taxes be levied at 100 percent of property value rather than the current 331/3 percent.
THOMAS LALLY*
Age: 57.
Home: 42 N. 12th St.
Employment: Tool and die maker at Delphi Packard.
Education: Graduate of Sharpsville High School; attended Pennsylvania State University.
Family: Wife, Elizabeth; three adult children.
Experience: 10 years on borough council; 25 years as a borough volunteer firefighter working with police and other borough employees.
Priority: To keep the cost of government down while providing as many services as possible.
GARY "GUS" GRANDY
Age: 46.
Home: 614 S. Eighth St.
Employment: Maintenance assistant for the Sharpsville Area School District.
Education: Graduate of Sharpsville High School; attended Edinboro University.
Family: Wife, Joyce.
Experience: Served on borough council for 16 years, his last term ending in 1999.
Priority: Protect the taxpayers' interests; explore the possibility of tax rebates; establish a business and community relations committee to better meet the needs of the business community.
