SCHOOL BELL
SCHOOL BELL
A history
The restoration of Damascus Grade School almost was completed in 1983 when brothers Carl and Bill Meiter suggested the idea of ringing the school bell each day at noon. The 99-year-old bell was the original one installed at the time the school was constructed in 1902 and given to the Damascus Area Historical Society by the James Penrose family. An estimate for installing a mechanical ringer at an approximate cost of $7,500 was discarded. Soon after, the time, motor, clutch reduction gear, spring and rope were assembled for less than $50.The bell now rings one minute every day at noon.
