May 3-5: Friends of Fellows Riverside Gardens spring plant sale includes unusual annuals, herbs, shrubs, perennials and garden-related items. May 3, 4 to 7 p.m. for members; public May 4, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and May 5, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
May 5: Naturalist Nancy Brundage will lead 8 a.m. bird walk. Bring binoculars, meet at Paradise Fish Farm. Call Ford Nature Center for directions.
9 to 11:30 a.m. Canoeing With Endangered Species: A Visit to Geneva Marsh. Naturalist Bob Faber leads this canoe trip through beautiful remote area. Endangered species, including the bald eagle, American bittern and river otter, thrive along the hidden canoe corridors. Experience with canoeing is recommended. Directions will be sent upon receipt of payment and registration. Call Ford Nature Center. Fee: $27.50 per person, includes canoe, paddle and lifejacket.
May 6: 2 p.m.: Hike around Newport wetlands with spring wildflowers in bloom. Meet at Newport wetlands. Hike is about 3 miles and rated moderately difficult with some low-lying and muddy terrain.
May 9: 8:30 a.m.: Walk through Fellows Riverside Gardens followed by a healthy breakfast of fruit and muffins while learning about the spring flowering shrub quince. Call the gardens to register. Fee: $6.
May 10: 10 a.m. or 11 a.m. Activities and story about baby animals for 2-year-olds and adult companions at Ford Nature Center. Call the center to register.
May 12: 8 a.m. bird walk with naturalist Nancy Brundage in Newport wetlands. Bring binoculars, meet at wetlands.
9 a.m.: Hike exploring McGuffey Wildlife Preserve. Learn about spring wildflowers, animal tracks and bluebird trail. Wear waterproof boots. About one mile.
May 13: 2 p.m.: Ride the southern end of the Mahoning Bikeway. Bike helmet is required. Call Ford Nature Center to register. Meet at Mahoning County Farm parking lot. About 4 miles.
May 15: 6:30 to 8 p.m. Miniature Roses. Minature roses are in a class by themselves. Children 6 years old and up will learn how to grow these delightful plants in time to enter the Rose Show at Fellows Riverside Gardens on June 23. Each child will received several plants to take home. Call the gardens to register. Fee: $9.
May 17-20: 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday; 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday; 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Home and Garden Show: Visit Fellows Riverside Gardens' booth at the Home Builders Association Home and Garden Show at the Canfield Fairgrounds. Please stop by to say hello and have your planting questions answered by our horticulture staff and volunteers. Call the gardens for more information.
May 18 or 19: Friday or Saturday, 10 a.m. or 1 p.m. Squish! A Wetlands Walk. This outdoor story time and wetland stroll is designed for preschoolers 3-5 years old and their adult companions. Meet at Newport wetlands parking lot, rain or shine. Call Ford Nature Center to register.
May 19: 1 to 4 p.m. Elizabeth Fellows Day. Joy and the scent of flowers will fill the air. Visit Fellows Riverside Gardens for a festive celebration of Elizabeth Fellows' 140th birthday. Attend a slide program about the history of the gardens at 2 p.m.
10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Gone Fishin'. Don't miss out on the best day to fish this spring! Prizes and fun are guaranteed for all. Professional bass fishermen from the Greater Ohio Tournament Trail will be on hand to share tips and teach children of all ages about fish and the best way to handle them. Don't forget your favorite fishing pole and bait.
May 20: 1 p.m. Ten Mile Hike. Are you ready? It's time for our spring ten-miler. We'll hike from Ford Nature Center to Shields Road and back. Meet at the center. Hike rating: Difficult due to length.
May 22-24 or 29-30: 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday orThursday. Adult Learn to Golf. Participants will receive six hours of basic golf instruction at the Golf Course. Call Pro Shop at (330) 740-7122 to register. Fee: $30 for residents, $50 for nonresidents.
May 23: 7 p.m. Plants and People Lecture Series: "Art and Restoration." Join local artist Phyllis Beard for a presentation on the style and techniques she uses in creating her oil paintings. Her exhibit, Full Bloom, is currently on display in the Weller Gallery. The restoration work Phyllis has performed in churches and the Mahoning County Courthouse will also be presented. Discussion and dessert will conclude the evening. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register.
May 24 or 26: 10 -11 a.m. or 1-2 p.m. Thursday or 10-11 a.m. or 1-2 p.m. Saturday. P is for Planting Petunias. The summer growing season is here, and its time to plant a hanging basket of pretty annuals. Children 3-5 years old and their adult companions will work together planting a hanging basket of flowers to care for and enjoy all summer. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register. Fee: $9.
May 26: 10 a.m. Book Discussion: "Walden, Or Life in the Woods." Readers, walkers and contemplators, stop your "lives of quiet desperation" for a moment and join in this naturalist-led discussion of "Walden" by Henry David Thoreau. Why did NBC's popular television show "Ed" recently do an episode on Thoreau? Do his 19th century thoughts on simplification, civil disobedience and life still apply today? This account of Thoreau's year spent alone in a cabin by a pond is a true American classic. Meet at Ford Nature Center.
May 27: 2 p.m. Tree Trail Trivia: Join us for this purely trivial hike about trees. You'll learn that black walnut shells can be used to polish metal and other amazing facts. Meet at Lake Glacier Boathouse parking lot. Hike rating: medium with some hills. About 2 miles.
