TRACK & amp; FIELD Poland is defending champ at its meet



The Massillon Jackson girls return Saturday in an attempt to keep their title.
POLAND -- Thirty five schools are scheduled to compete in the Poland Invitational track and field meet Saturday. Field events, preliminaries in the sprints and hurdles will start at 9:15 a.m.
Following the semifinals, the girls and boys 4x800 relays will get the finals underway at 1 p.m.
Poland is the defending boys champion, while Massillon Jackson will defend its girls title.
Discus: Scott Kyser of Leetonia, with the area's top throw in the discus (168 feet, 10 inches), has beaten Steve Vallos of Boardman (165-1) twice this season. Ryan Murphy of Lakeview (157-0), Robert Hughes of Rayen (150-8) and Jon Christensen of Massillon Perry (150-6) will also contend.
Massillon Jackson's Blake Dickson has a season-best effort of 55-10 in the shot put. Kyser (55-21/2) and Ken Kraft (50-91/4) of Mooney should be among those to test him.
In the 3200-meter run, Poland's Drew Frum (9 minutes, 42 seconds), Girard's Matt Penza (9:56) and McDonald's David Stonestreet should be among the top contenders.
In the 110 hurdles, Boardman's Shawn Carlson (14.9) and Rich Lipore (15.0) and Rayen's Dennis Reed (14.9) are entered.
Cleveland Heights Beaumont, Boardman, Massillon Jackson, Massillon Perry and Akron Firestone are expected to contend for the girls championship.
Freshman Amber Bland (12.1) of Boardman and Carol Holmes (12.5) of McDonald are entered in the 100. Lashaunta Moore (11.8) of Akron Firestone has the best time among the entrants.
The 1600 will feature Maggie Infeld (5:10) of Beaumont, Kaitlin Kempe (5:20) of Austintown Fitch, Kim Nemergut (5:20) of South Range and Brittany Durkin (5:22) of Boardman.
The discus will include Christen Clemson (136-9) of Maplewood and Lindsay Cobey (121-7) and Marian Steele (117-7) of Canfield.
Girls 400: Sophomore Monica Cuevas (58.4) of Boardman and Mooney's Lori Patrone (59.5) will participate in the 400. Shavonne Maclin of Beaumont has run the event in 56.5.
In the hurdles, Georgiann Pavlich of Poland, Stephanie Davis and Sarah Baker of Fitch and Cara Russo of Warren JFK should be contenders.
The top five schools entered in the 4x800 relay are Massillon Perry (8:15), Boardman (8:20), Mooney (8:20), Maplewood (8:20) and McDonald (8:28).
