SOFTBALL S. Range, J-M girls unhittable
Corey Velk of Jackson-Milton and Niki Knopp of South Range fired no-hitters.
NORTH JACKSON -- Sophomore Corey Velk (6-6) pitched a no-hitter, struck out seven and walked one Thursday as the Jackson-Milton High softball team blanked LaBrae 3-0.
The Bluejays (6-7) scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Jessica Wilmoth doubled, advanced to third on a single by Jane Fenton, then scored when Rachel Evans reached on a squeeze-bunt single.
Teresa Yeager singled to score Fenton, and Courtney Reppy's grounder scored Evans.
South Range 15, Lowellville 0: NORTH LIMA -- Niki Knopp of South Range pitched a perfect game.
Knopp struck out four.
The Raiders scored all their runs in the first two innings.
Jen Ridgeway paced South Range with a double and two singles. She scored twice and stole a base.
Jen Toth hit a double and single, drove in run, scored twice and stole a base.
Canfield 11, Liberty 1: CANFIELD -- Everyone in the starting lineup had at least one hit as the Cardinals (11-6) collected 18.
Julie Playforth hit four singles, drove in three runs and scored once for the Cardinals. Kelly Williams chipped in with three singles, scored twice and stole a base.
Megan Turocy (4-1) scattered seven hits and struck out one to pick up the win.
Mineral Ridge 6, Mooney 2: MINERAL RIDGE -- The Rams (11-0) scored three runs in the first inning and three more in the second.
Katie Olive hit a three-run triple in the second inning. Holly Mills hit a single and double for the Rams.
Mooney (9-6) was paced by Danielle Kepics with two singles.
Rayen 17, Youngstown Christian 14: YOUNGSTOWN -- Rayen scored seven runs in the fourth inning and six more in the fifth.
Shanna Woodberry led the Tigers with a triple, three singles, five RBIs, five runs scored and three stolen bases. Marcella Jones hit two doubles, a single, drove in five runs and scored twice.
Youngstown Christian's Liz Vanarsdale hit a triple and a single, drove in three runs and scored twice.
