PREP SOFTBALL Chaney's Mshar just misses gem



The pitcher retired the first 20 Campbell batters.
CAMPBELL -- Tara Mshar just missed pitching a perfect game for the Chaney High softball team Thursday.
Mshar, a junior, threw a one-hitter, struck out 12 and walked only one in a 13-1 victory over Campbell Memorial at Roosevelt Park.
Mshar (6-1) retired the first 20 batters of the game and had two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
But a Campbell (4-9) batter reached first on an error to foil Mshar's perfect game bid, then Shannon Pavlansky followed with a run-scoring double before Mshar got the final out.
Catcher Amanda Buzzacco had two doubles and Mshar added a triple for Chaney (8-3)
Southington 3, Lordstown 2: SOUTHINGTON -- Lindsay Byer pitched a two-hitter with 15 strikeouts, as Southington (10-1, 9-1) rallied for three runs in the last of the seventh to win the East Suburban Conference game.
Byer (6-1), a junior, also had a two-run single to tie the score at 2, before Becca Derr drove in the winning run with a double.
Byer drove in Bethanie Dunlap, who reached base on an error, and Melissa Smith, who followed with a single.
Derr also had two singles.
Champion 13, Girard 0: GIRARD -- Sophomore Stephanie Weaver (6-0) pitched a three-hitter with 12 strikeouts for the Flashes (12-2, 7-1 Trumbull Athletic Conference).
Freshman Jessica Carpenter led the attack with four hits, including a double, while Jessica Rowland added a triple and a single.
The Indians are 5-10, 2-9.
Struthers 11, Niles 2: STRUTHERS -- Struthers scored 10 runs in the third inning to break away from a 1-1 tie.
Michele Firmstone had three hits, including a two-run triple, for Struthers (11-4, 4-2 Metro Athletic Conference).
Jaime Zupko hit a two-run single and Laura Bell doubled home two runs.
Bell had two hits and Heather Hrina singled twice.
Tina Palumbo (7-3) and Loriel Singer combined on a four-hitter.
Austintown Fitch 14, Warren Harding 3: AUSTINTOWN -- Joanna Fergus and Andrea Diyorio each had three hits for Austintown Fitch (9-5, 2-1 Steel Valley Conference), which scored its season-high in runs.
Julie Ledford, Brianna Ozias and Fergus each had a double for the Falcons, while Ledford and Ozias each had two hits. Fergus drove in four runs, while Diyorio and Ozias each had two RBIs.
For Warren Harding (4-11, 1-6), Lindsey Romack had three hits, while Leigh Carlson singled twice.
