Youngstown State: Swimmers Danielle Blagg of North Olmsted and Megan Blazek of Chattanooga, Tenn., have signed national letters-of-intent. Blagg competes in the breaststroke and qualified for the state meet last year. Blazek is a distance swimmer and competes in the backstroke.
Volleyball coach Joe Conroy named captains for the 2001 team. Melissa Lyczkowski, Kristen Meech and Rebecca Sylak were the leading vote-getters in balloting by the team. Sylak, from Mineral Ridge High, was a first-team All-Mid-Continent Conference selection last season. Meech earned second-team honors. Lyczkowski, the school's all-time leader in assists (3,781), was also named to the all-conference second team.
Ohio State: The Ohio News Network will carry the spring football game from Columbus Crew Stadium on Saturday. Coverage begins at 1 p.m. The game opens the Jim Tressel era as Buckeyes coach. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.
Malone: Katie Lamport, a sophomore on the softball team from Poland High, has been named for the second straight year to the National Christian College Athletic Association All-East Region Team. A designated hitter and pitcher, Lamport led Malone in batting through 28 games with a .407 average (33-for-81). She helped the Pioneers to a 19-11 record through Monday, including 13-5 in the American Mideast Conference for fourth place. Lamport also was tied for the Malone lead in homers (3), and had a second-best 16 RBIs with 15 runs scored and eight doubles. On the mound, Lamport had a 1-3 record in 19 innings with a 4.79 ERA and 17 strikeouts. She gave up 23 hits, 20 walks and 13 earned runs.
Thiel: Nakisha Logan, a senior from The Rayen School, was named Presidents' Athletic Conference Women's track and field athlete of the week. Logan finished among the top five in three events at the Slippery Rock University Open. Logan placed second in the high jump (5-feet-0), third in the 100-meter high hurdles (15.96 seconds) and fifth in the long jump (17-43/4).
