Memorial dedication
Memorial dedication
LOWELLVILLE -- American Legion Post 247 will dedicate a memorial commemorating village veterans at 5 p.m. Sunday at village hall.
The memorial, next to village hall, lists 951 soldiers who fought in battles dating from World War I up to the Persian Gulf War.
Mayor Joseph Rossi, who also serves as post commander, said the monument suffered extensive water damage after it was built in the late 1980s by Struthers artist Felix Battista.
"It was torn down and rebuilt," Rossi said. The $6,500 renovation was completed last September. The original structure was formed from concrete, but Rossi said the artist used red brick and limestone in the latest piece.
A dinner will follow the commemoration at the Mount Carmel Society, 102 Washington St., is open to the public; reservations are required.
Qualified candidates
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Citizens' League of Greater Youngstown has found Judge Robert Douglas of Youngstown Municipal Court and Anthony Farris, his opponent in the May 8 Democratic primary, qualified, meaning the group believes they both possess the qualities necessary to have the office.
The league chose not to endorse either candidate. The league also found Patrick Lowry, who is running for Youngstown council president, to be qualified. Council President Charles Sammarone, who is running for re-election, did not participate in the league's evaluation process.

Shiley, Niles-Cortland Road, and TMH are named as defendants. Officials at TMH declined to comment. Dr. Shiley could not be reached to comment.
