Make your own nectar -- add one part table sugar to four parts boiling water, mix, and refrigerate;
Don't use honey, and don't make the nectar too sweet. Both these errors can harm or even kill hummers;
Keep feeders clean;
Plant some nectar-bearing flowers such as trumpet honeysuckle, trumpetcreeper, cardinal flower, or bee balm to provide natural nectar sources;
Keep feeders up until mid-October for late migrants.
