SVC/CITY SERIES Larosa powers Mooney with second career no-hitter



Boardman remains a half-game ahead of the Cardinals after an 8-5 victory over Harding.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Junior Melissa Larosa pitched her second career no-hitter Wednesday as th Cardinal Mooney High softball team blanked Ursuline, 3-0, in a Steel Valley Conference game at Wick Recreation Center.
Larosa (5-1) registered 13 strikeouts, walked two and hit a batter. Her first no-hitter came against South Range last spring.
Of Mooney's nine hits, junior Andrea Fryda had a single and double while senior Amy Sandel had two singles.
Also for the Cardinals (9-2, 4-1), junior Danielle Kepics had two singles while sophomore Adrienne Detesco added a double and RBI.
Megan Marenkovic was one of four Ursuline batters to reach base safely. After reaching first base on a fielder's choice in the first inning, Marenkovic stole second.
Erin Zubal (4-6) gave up nine hits as the losing pitcher for the Irish (4-7, 1-4).
Boardman 8, Harding 5: WARREN -- Junior Gina Rango had a single and double while sophomore Jennifer Feret doubled and finished with four RBIs for the Spartans (13-2, 4-0 SVC).
Senior pitcher Marissa Bartholomew improved her record to 9-2.
For Harding (4-10, 1-5), Leigh Carlson tripled and doubled. Kiisha Warfield added a double and single and Lindsey Romack two singles.
Wilson 19-11, Rayen 13-1: YOUNGSTOWN -- Woodrow Wilson battled back from a 10-0 first-inning deficit to defeat Rayen in the first City Series game at Pemberton Park.
Wilson's second win ended after five innings due to darkness.
In the opener, Nancy Crespo had seven RBIs as she hit for the cycle and finished 4-for-4. Angelina Calderone added three hits while Delia Rosario, Liz Irizarry and Nicole Teasley had two hits apiece for Wilson.
For Rayen, Myling Bonilla had a three-run double in the first inning and another RBI later. Sophomore Dana Stredrick had two hits and two RBIs while Marcella Jones had three RBIs with two hits including a double.
In the second game, Teasley, a senior, threw a two-hitter as Jones and Bonilla each singled for Rayen (0-6, 0-2).
Rosario, a sophomore, had a grand slam for Wilson (2-4, 2-0). Teammates Samantha Bowers had two hits including an RBI double and sophomore Jessica Martinez had three hits including a double.
Chaney 9, Warren JFK 6: WARREN -- Senior Amanda Buzzacco, sophomore Angela Armstrong and junior Tara Mshar all had two hits for Chaney (7-3) which won its second game in a row.
Starting pitcher Amanda Yazbek improved her record to 2-2.
Kelly Puskar had a two-run triple in the fourth inning for JFK.
