STRUTHERS Fiery truck wreck causes mess, shuts down Bridge Street bridge

STRUTHERS -- The Bridge Street bridge over the Mahoning River was closed more than 12 hours Wednesday after the driver of a tractor-trailer hauling garbage to BFI's Poland landfill lost control, hit two other trucks and caused a fiery wreck and mess on the bridge.
The garbage hauling truck, driven by Joseph R. McCord, 43, of Brooklyn, N.Y., which was southbound on state Route 616, went out of control while going downhill, hitting and bouncing off a northbound tractor-trailer at the bottom of the hill at 11:24 a.m.
The garbage truck then hit another southbound tractor-trailer, jumped the curb, riding the curb and bridge retaining wall, and ripped open its diesel fuel tanks.
Sparks from running along the concrete ignited the diesel fuel, burning and destroying the garbage truck and contaminating the garbage, police said.
Struthers police and firefighters were at the scene along with the Mahoning County Hazmat Team, which supervised the time-consuming cleanup. County Engineer Richard Marsico inspected the bridge for structural damage and determined it was safe to reopen. The bridge reopened at 11:40 p.m. There were no injuries.
