SALEM -- Authorities are investigating a collision that happened between two city school buses during a field trip to Akron.
No children were seriously injured in the accident, which occurred around 9:48 a.m. Tuesday on Interstate 76 near Portage County Road 18 in Portage County, the Ravenna Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol reported.
Details on what caused the crash remain sketchy. But it appears that one bus struck the rear of the other as they were westbound on the interstate, a patrol spokeswoman said this morning.
The patrol is still investigating. No one has been cited.
Sent to hospital: No injuries were initially reported. But medical authorities examined the youngsters on the two buses and sent seven of them to Akron Children's Hospital for further evaluation. All were released.
About 340 children in grades four through six were on eight buses traveling to Canal Park in Akron to attend an Akron Aeros game when the accident occurred, schools Superintendent Dr. David Brobeck said today.
The field trip included presentations on the "science of baseball," groundskeeping and baseball statistics.
All of the children, except the ones taken to the hospital, completed the field trip, Brobeck said.
