NOTEBOOK From Jacobs Field

Not his night: Indians center fielder Kenny Lofton has enjoyed better games than Tuesday's. In the first inning, Lofton broke in on a ball hit by Darin Erstad. The ball landed behind him for a double. Lofton ran into a double play in the third inning when he ran from second base to third on a flyball out. In the seventh inning, Lofton's outstretched arm couldn't catch another ball hit by Erstad that fell for a triple.
Not leadoff: Erstad batted in the second position in Tuesday's game. It was the first game Erstad hasn't been the Anaheim leadoff batter since Sept. 2, 1999, when he batted seventh in a game at Jacobs Field.
Joyner's dinger: Wally Joyner's fourth-inning homer was his first at Jacobs Field. Joyner has been on National League teams since 1996. His last homer in Cleveland was on May 12, 1993, when he was with the Royals.
Winning pitcher: Scott Schoeneweis improved to 1-3 lifetime against Cleveland. In 2001, the Angels (8-12) are 4-1 in games he starts.
Near the top: Entering the game, the Indians had the second-best fielding team in the American League (.988 fielding percentage). The two errors Paul Shuey received on the same eighth-inning play (bobbled bunt, wild throw to first) will lower that percentage substantially.
Better pitching: In the nine games before Tuesday, Indians starters were 6-1 with a 3.12 earned-run average. The Indians starters' ERA dropped from 7.33 to 4.92.
Getting better: Injured starting pitchers Charles Nagy and Jaret Wright are expected in Cleveland later this week to continue their rehabilitation. Nagy, who had elbow surgery on his pitching arm last May, threw 86 pitches over seven innings last Friday in an extended spring start. He is expected to throw a simulated game Thursday. Wright, who is recovering from shoulder surgery last August, threw 99 pitches over seven innings Sunday and is expected to do the same here Saturday.
On deck: Left-hander C.C. Sabathia (2-0, 4.86 ERA) will make his fourth start of the season tonight against Angels right-hander Ismael Valdes (0-2, 3.29). Thursday at 7, Chuck Finley (1-2, 6.45), the Indians' other left-handed starter, pitches against his former team and right-hander Pat Rapp (0-3, 6.75).
