BOARDMAN -- Two cars, one a Youngstown cruiser, were damaged between 7:30 p.m. Monday and 7:30 a.m. Tuesday at Donnell Ford's rear parking lot on Market Street. Ron DiTullio, Donnell's parts and service director, discovered the damage when he reported to work Tuesday. Vandals attempted to remove the emergency light bar on the cruiser, causing about $250 in damage, police said. The passenger window on the other car was smashed, the radio stolen and the dash damaged.
Vandals strike at lot
BOARDMAN -- At least seven cars were damaged by vandals in the parking lot of Callos Co. on Market Street between 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, police said. Vandals slashed tires and convertible tops and spray painted hoods, bumpers and fenders.
Local fraud victim
BOARDMAN -- A Youngstown man is the apparent victim of fraud, police said. The man told police that Dillard National Bank notified him about 1 p.m. Saturday that the line of credit on his Dillard's department store credit card could not be increased. Dillard's has a store in the Southern Park Mall.
The man told police he does not have a Dillard's credit card nor has he applied for one. After contacting the store and Trans Union, a credit reporting agency, the man discovered someone had used his personal information to apply for a credit card by mail and subsequently maxed out the available credit.
Closed for walk-a-thon
YOUNGSTOWN -- Several Mill Creek Park roads and a park bridge will be closed from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday for the Multiple Sclerosis Services Agency Walk-a-thon. Closed will be East Glacier, Robinson Hill, East Park, Valley, Old Mill and East Newport drives and the Slippery Rock Bridge. Old Furnace and Canfield roads will remain open to traffic.
'Rotary Reads Week'
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Rotary Club of Youngstown will conduct "Rotary Reads Week" Monday through May 4 at Harding Elementary School. Twenty-six Rotarians will read to all 19 classes in kindergarten and grades 1-4 at Harding in a program designed to enhance pupils' appreciation for reading and emphasize its importance as a skill necessary for success. In December, Rotarians distributed 420 free books to Harding students.
School patrol officer
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Police officer Ken Goist of Lowellville has been hired to patrol Springfield schools under a Community Oriented Policing grant awarded to the village. Three candidates were interviewed by school officials and Goist was recommended to village council, which hired him at a special meeting Monday. The COPS grant provides $125,000 over the next three years to put the officer in schools. Goist was a part-time village patrolman.
Charges dismissed
LISBON -- Charges filed in 1999 against two Mahoning County men have been dismissed in Columbiana County Common Pleas Court because the men already face charges in federal court.
Judge C. Ashley Pike approved the dismissal of charges against Russell J. Saadey Jr., 46, of Austintown, and Mitchell Hulvalchick III, 37, of Boardman. The two men were accused of engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity between September 1993 and December 1995. Most of the reported activity occurred in Mahoning County.
Letter carrier honored
HUBBARD -- Judith Gasior, a letter carrier with the Hubbard post office, has worked more than 30 years without an at-fault accident. She was to be presented a plaque today by Hubbard Postmaster Fred Zagotti in conjunction with her entry into the Million Mile Club.
The club, administered by the National Safety Council, is open to professional drivers who log more than 1 million accident-free miles or who have driven more than 30 years without an at-fault accident.
Gasior, a Hubbard native, was the first female letter carrier hired by the Hubbard post office.
