PREP SOFTBALL McCabe, Feret, Rango put bats to work in win

AUSTINTOWN -- Mary McCabe, Gina Rango and Jennifer Feret all had four singles, as the Boardman High softball team snapped a two-game losing streak with a 9-0 Steel Valley Conference win over Fitch Monday.
Jennifer Pancake and Laura Amero added two hits apiece as the Spartans (12-3, 3-0 SVC) had 17 hits overall.
Marissa Bartholomew (8-2) threw a two-hitter with three strikeouts at the Falcons (8-5, 1-1).
Southington 11, Fairport 1: FAIRPORT -- Lindsay Byer and Brittney Campana combined on a no-hitter for Southington.
Byer (4-1) opened the season with a no-hitter and threw the first four innings against the Skippers.
She struck out 10 and issued two walks.
Byer had three hits, including a double, while Stephanie Hudak went 2-for-2 with two RBIs.
Struthers 4, Howland 0: WARREN -- Michele Firmstone had a single and an RBI while Loriel Singer singled twice for the Wildcats.
Struthers (9-3, 2-1 Metro Athletic Conference) also got a run on a single by Jaime Zupko. The Wildcats scored all their runs in the fourth.
The Tigers are 5-6, 0-2.
LaBrae 3, Girard 2: LEAVITTSBURG -- Amanda Weigard had three hits and stole three bases for LaBrae (5-1, 5-1 Trumbull Athletic Conference).
Rachael Higgins added two hits while Laura Fewell and Lisa Klingensmith both doubled.
Tendra Needles scattered four hits and struck out seven in gaining her fifth win.
Springfield 11, Lowellville 1: LOWELLVILLE -- Renee Warren, Jessica Snyder and Brook Tabaka each had three hits for Springfield (7-7, 5-2 Inter-County League).
Tabaka doubled twice while Taryn Dobson, Warren and Snyder each had a double for the Tigers, who had 14 hits.
Lauren Shevetz and Michele Guidos both doubled for the Rockets.
Mineral Ridge 3, Mathews 1: VIENNA -- Ashley Ault scattered five hits and also collected a pair of singles to lead Mineral Ridge to its ninth straight victory.
Katie Olive added a triple and a single for the unbeaten Rams. Brittany Parks and Nikki Shreves each had two hits for Mathews, while Jaci Eahrey accounted for Mathews' only run with a homer in the third inning.
Jackson-Milton 3, South Range 0: NORTH JACKSON -- Corey Velk ignited a rally in the fifth inning to break a scoreless tie.
Velk, who was also the winning pitcher, singled and was replaced by pinch-runner Asia Kaloci. Kaloci stole second, then scored on a double by Abbey DeZee. Two batters later, DeZee scored on a ground-out by Jayne Fenton.
DeZee was the lone Bluejay (5-7) with two hits.
Velk struck out nine while walking only two and giving up only two hits. Jenn Toth took the loss for South Range (6-8), striking out seven and walking two.
