YOUNGSTOWN -- Megan Turocy pitched a one-hitter, leading the Canfield High softball team to a 2-1 victory over Cardinal Mooney Monday.
Turocy yielded a lead-off single to Sara Wright, then shut the door the rest of the way.
Wright came around to score, thanks to a pair of wild pitches and a sacrifice.
Canfield got on the board in the third inning when Julie Playforth grounded out, scoring Kelly Williams with the game-tying run.
Williams finished with three of Canfield's seven hits.
Winning run: Canfield took the lead for good in the fourth inning when Trisha McHenry was driven in by an Amanda Williams grounder.
McHenry had reached on a double, the game's only extra-base hit.
Turocy, who retired the last seven batters, yielded only two base runners over the final four innings. Both reached on errors.
"I thought I was OK warming up but in that first inning I was all arm," Turocy said.
"After that I was able to locate my pitches better and as the game went on I got more confidence."
Her complete-game effort saw only three fly ball outs to go along with four strikeouts and three walks.
"She was a little wild early but she showed some character and settled down," Mooney coach Mark Rinehart said.
"We thought we could do some things if we got people on base, but they executed and we didn't."
"We have a young team and this was a really important win for us," said Canfield coach Fred Mayhew. "I've seen our confidence go up with each win. To beat a team the caliber of Mooney can only give us a boost going into the tournament."
