PREP BASEBALL Chaney on streak; Boardman prevails



Jeff Nastase's mound record improved to 4-0 after Poland beat Canfield.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Chaney High used six hits, six walks and four Wilson errors to register a 13-0 City Series baseball win Monday.
Juan Serrano had two singles, two RBIs and two steals to lead the Cowboys (5-4, 1-0 City Series) who have won three in a row.
Chaney scored six times in the third and used a six-run fourth to put the game out of reach. Gary Boris (1-1) got the win and doubled.
Wilson is 0-8, 0-2.
Boardman 15, Fitch 10: BOARDMAN -- Four Spartans hit home runs, including two by Giancarlo Silvestri, and Boardman (11-3, 5-0 Steel Valley Conference) had eight extra-base hits overall.
Silvestri and Matt Repec combined for nine RBIs. Repec homered and tripled, and struck out four while running his pitching record to 5-0.
Also collecting two hits apiece for Boardman were Mike Kreiger, Chris King and Sean Curry. King and Curry were among those who homered.
For Fitch (10-6, 1-2), Mike DeToro tripled and doubled. He was 3-for-5 with three RBIs.
Poland 8, Canfield 4: CANFIELD -- Jeff Nastase and Jeff Moore each had three hits while Jim Mitolo had two hits for the Bulldogs (9-1, 4-1 Metro Athletic Conference).
Nastase (4-0) struck out five to get the decision.
Scott Wadman had a single and a homer while Dave Miller and Paul Suhar each had two hits for the Cardinals (9-6, 2-3).
Newton Falls 7, Badger 1: NEWTON FALLS -- Junior Eric Lance (2-1) threw a complete-game one-hitter with 10 strikeouts and two walks for the Tigers (4-5, 3-3 Trumbull Athletic Conference).
Jason Spahlinger, Dave Montgomery and Darrin Brounce each singled in two runs for Newton Falls, which had a five-run fourth inning.
Tom Nemet and Brounce each had a double.
Liberty 14, Brookfield 7: LIBERTY -- The Leopards scored 10 runs in the fifth inning.
Liberty's (4-7, 3-3 TAC) Rob Kay had three singles, while Joe Lopez, Rex Coandle, Rick Lopez and Jerry Saddle all had two singles. Julian Hayes had two hits for Brookfield.
Springfield 9, Lowellville 5: STRUTHERS -- The Tigers scored five runs in the first and had 14 hits in the game.
Isaac Smolko and Jason Sobnosky each had a double for Springfield.
Jason Goist doubled for the Rockets (1-8, 0-4 Inter-County League).
Western Reserve 10, McDonald 3: BERLIN CENTER -- McDonald pitchers struck out 20 batters, but were overshadowed by Bob Barney, who worked five nearly-perfect innings of relief.
Barney struck out seven and didn't walk a batter, as Western Reserve won in 11 innings.
For McDonald, Dustin Rivera struck out 16 batters over eight innings, and Mike VanDyke struck out four in three innings of relief.
With the score 3-3, Jason Young started the 11th with a triple, then Andrew Lenhart walked. A William Kuebler single scored Lenhart for the go-ahead run, then Western Reserve (9-4, 4-4 ICL) scored six more times on three hits.
Mark Brown had two singles for McDonald (2-5, 1-5).
Campbell 4, Warren JFK 2: WARREN -- Chris Milnik drove in the winning run in the sixth inning.
Eric Conilla added two hits and two RBIs for the Red Devils (5-6).
Sebring 5, Crestview 3: SEBRING -- Sebring's Joe Eaton singled home two runs in a three-run fourth inning.
Eaton had two hits, including a double, for the Trojans (8-4, 6-2 Tri-County League).
Thompson had three hits for Crestview and Karnofel added a home run while Smith hit a double and triple.
Youngstown Christian 6, Portersville Christian 5: YOUNGSTOWN -- Billy Lucas collected three hits, including a triple for the Eagles (3-0-1). Mike Byrdy got the win and had a single and a double.
