PAY RAISE Refused by English



U.S. Rep. Phil English of Erie, R-21st, refused his automatic Congressional pay raise again in 2000, opting to give that money to charities in his district. The congressman and his wife, Chris, paid more than $38,000 to the government in federal taxes for the year based on an income of $181,034. English also refused to take a $3,000 tax deduction available only to members of Congress. Recipients of his pay raise are:
Southwest Gardens Economic Development Corp., Farrell; WQLN, Erie; SafeNet of Erie County; Victims Outreach Intervention Center of Butler County; Center for Family Services of Crawford County: $500.
The Barber Center of Erie: $385.
Second Harvest Food Bank of Erie; Independence House of Erie; Martin Luther King Center Scholarship of Erie County; the City Mission of Erie; World War II Memorial of Erie; Mercer County Red Cross; John XXIII Home of Hermitage: $250.
