Hubbard School Board errs in levy deception
EDITOR:
Whether the tax proposed by the Hubbard Board of Education is needed or not is not the issue. The campaign the board is running is misleading at best, bordering on deceptive.
Very large signs have been posted around town asking the voters to "restore" the 9.9-mill levy. My first impression was the this 9.9 mills was up for renewal, and this is what I feel the board of education was depending on. Mislead the electorate into thinking this was a renewal and they would increase the chances of passage.
This is not a renewal levy, this is an additional 3.7 mills intended to restore the buying power of the original 9.9 mills which has with inflation lost 37 percent of its buying power. I understand inflation. I deal with a loss in buying power every day. If the board needs additional funds, ask for them. Whenever the voters question the need for additional taxes, we are hit with the argument that the money is needed to effectively educate our children, and aren't our children worth the additional tax burden? It's time to turn the tables on them and ask, "Isn't this a beautiful message that we are sending our kids?" It's okay to deceive people to get what you want. Cause enough confusion, and you can trick people into voting for something.
I'm offended by this because I've enough to do trying to pay my bills and raise my family in an environment that makes doing the right thing a very hard road to travel, without having to keep an eye on people who were elected to run my school district with the utmost integrity and to set the example for a community. I think they should be ashamed of themselves for devising this scheme and then have the nerve to implement it.
It's unfortunate because the money may be needed. I'll never be convinced that it is, because the issue is clouded by the deception. Ask the question, if the money is truly needed and could be documented, then why the need for the deception. The issue could have stood on its own merit.

Just another Sunday?
EDITOR:
It has always baffled me why Easter Sunday should not be a paid holiday for employees. Just another Sunday. The most spectacular even in history occurred and it is treated as just another Sunday.
The word "holiday" has always been an event worth celebrating. "Holiday" is probably derived from "holy day." Why disguise it by substituting an "i" for a "y"?

Postmaster should cut bonuses before service
EDITOR:
So the U.S. Postal Service is losing millions. Plans are for five-day delivery service and the consolidation of plants and offices. The price of stamps probably will go up again. Cutbacks are in order.
I hope that the postmaster general plans to include in those cuts the thousands of dollars in bonuses doled out each year to middle and upper management. The people who do the real work, (like post office personnel and carriers) receive no such bonuses.
I'm sure that would save the post office a bundle of money.

In the letter to the editor from Bud Ogilbee published last Friday, the reference to the roads in Kinsman Township being cold mix should have read "all the county roads in Kinsman Township are cold mix."
