MAHONING COUNTY MEET Boardman, Fitch set to defend track titles



The 89th Mahoning County track and field meet is Wednesday at Austintown Fitch.
AUSTINTOWN -- Boardman High's boys team and Austintown Fitch's girls will defend their championships in the 89th Mahoning County track and field meet Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at Fitch High's Falcon stadium.
The Spartans will rely on Shawn Carlson, Rich Lipore and Jim Irwin in the hurdles. In addition, Steve Vallos of Boardman has one of the area's best throws in the discus (165 feet, 1 inch), and teammate Andrew Crogan has the area's top marks in the high jump (6-8) and long jump (20-11 1/2).
West Branch's Tom Hinton (41.5 seconds) will test Irwin (41.3) and Lipore (41.7) in the 300 hurdles.
Fitch will be counting on Davanzo Tate (10.7) in the 100, pole vaulter Dave Medicus and the 4x800, 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams for points.
Poland's Andrew Frum will defend his championships in the 1600 (4:34.4) and 3200 (9:42).
Girls: Austintown Fitch's girls team features Stephanie Davis, Marian Steele and Sarah Baker, and the 4x200 and 4x100 relay teams.
Boardman's Brittany Durkin (5:24) and Gina Mavrikis (5:44), along with West Branch's Lisa Davies (5:41) and Fitch's Kaitlin Kempe (5:49), are entered in the 1600.
Georgiann Pavlich of Poland (15.3) and (48.8) will be the athlete to beat in the 100 and 300 hurdles.
In Division II, defending champion South Range returns Kim Nemergut, who won the 1600 and 3200.
The Raiders' Heidi Kelecava and Michelle Morrison of Western Reserve will compete in the hurdles, while Anne Marie Ricciardi of Western Reserve will be tough to beat in the long jump (16-11 3/4) and high jump (5-2).
Western Reserve won the Div. II boys championship last year and Jackson-Milton was second.
Poland Invitational: POLAND -- There will be 34 boys teams and 32 girls teams in the Poland High Invitational Saturday.
Last year, the Bulldogs won the boys title with 81 points and Massillon Jackson took the girls crown with 83 points.
