Allstate grant will help bike safety program



STRUTHERS -- "Cents for Safety," a bicycle safety awareness program in the local school district, recently received a $1,000 grant from Allstate Insurance Foundation.
The grant will go toward purchasing helmets for elementary school pupils who complete a hands-on bicycle safety program and whose parents agree in writing to encourage their children to wear helmets while riding their bicycles.
The bicycle safety program, "Cents for Safety," will be presented in conjunction with Bicycle Safety Awareness Week, which begins May 7. Presentations are in cooperation with the Struthers Police Department, Safe Kids Coalition and Struthers City Schools.
Florence A. Evans and Dora Zanni, teachers at Lyon Plat Elementary and Sexton Street schools are coordinators of the project.
The program will be presented as follows:
* May 7: Sexton Elementary School, grades 2 through 4.
* May 8: Lyon Plan Elementary School, grades 2 through 4.
* May 9: Manor Avenue Elementary, grades 2 through 4.
* May 10: Center Street Elementary, grades 2 through 4.
* May 11: St. Nicholas Parochial School, grades 2 through 4.
* May 12: All current and incoming kindergarten pupils, all pupils in grade 1 and all BCC pupils living in the Struthers City School district.
