Free health tests
The Mobile Outreach Team of the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center at Butler will provide free health screenings to veterans from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 10 at American Legion Post 749, Wampum, Pa. Veterans should bring their discharge papers.
Loyalty Day program
The Ashtabula County Council of Veterans of Foreign Wars Loyalty Day will be May 7 at Jefferson Area High School.

Vehicle repair
Marine Corps Sgt. David L. Surrena (Mercer High School '95) a son of Harry and Joyce Surrena, 2595 Valley Road, Mercer, graduated from light-armored vehicle repair course.
Leadership school
Two area residents graduated from Air Force Airman Leadership School. They are: Senior Airman Eric J. Ferro, a son of Phillip and Joy Ferro, Morningside, Niles; and Army Spec. Don R. Crouser, a son of Corinne D. Booth, Carrol Avenue, Orwell.

UMarine Corps Cpl. John J. Broadhead, a son of Irene M. Broadhead, 3220 Forrest Ave., Murrysville, Pa., and Richard Broadhead, 2562 Mercer St., Sandy Lake, Pa., was promoted to his current rank while serving with Headquarters Squadron, Marine Corps Air Station, Beaufort, S.C.
UAir Force Technical Sgt. John E. Golloway Jr., a son of John E. and Phyllis N. Golloway, Four Winds Court, Niles, was promoted to his present rank while serving as a weapons system evaluation program expediter with the 83rd Fighter Weapons Squadron, Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla.

2000 Soldier of Year
Army Spec. James A. Haverstock was 2000 Soldier of the Year for Troop 5, 15th Cavalry Regiment, Fort Knox, Ky. A cavalry scout, Haverstock is a son of Mark S. and Deborah K. Haverstock of Youngstown.
