MONSIGNOR GEORGE F. WINCA, 90 Was pastor emeritus of St. Matthias



YOUNGSTOWN -- Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Matthias Church for Monsignor George F. Winca, 90, pastor emeritus of St. Matthias Parish, of Regina Health Care Center in Cleveland, who died Friday in the center.
Monsignor Winca was born Feb. 22, 1911, in Cleveland, a son of Frank and Rose Kurpar Winca. He attended Sts. Cyril and Methodius School in Lakewood and St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland. Continuing his education at Illinois Benedictine College, Lisle, Ill., he studied for the priesthood at St. Mary's Seminary in Cleveland. He was ordained April 2, 1938, in St. John Cathedral, Cleveland.
After his ordination, he served as associate pastor at St. Boniface Parish, Cleveland, St. Mary Parish in Warren, and St. Matthias Church in Youngstown. In 1944 he taught religion in public high school in addition to his pastoral duties.
He was named to his first pastorate in 1952 at St. Bernadette Parish, Masury, and became pastor of Sts. Cyril and Methodius Parish in Youngstown and St. Matthias Parish. He retired May 1, 1974. He was named Prelate of Honor on April 5, 2000.
He leaves three brothers, Frank of Cleveland, Jack of Alabama and the Rev. Harry of St. Edwards in Parkman, Ohio, and St. Lucy Mission in Middlefield, Ohio.
A brother, John, is deceased.
Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. today at Joseph Misencik Funeral Home, 12500 Madison Ave., Lakewood; from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in St. Matthias Church, 915 Cornell St., Youngstown, where a prayer service will be at 8 p.m.; and for one hour before services Wednesday in the church.
