DUI checkpoint arrests
YOUNGSTOWN -- A checkpoint staged on Glenwood Avenue resulted in three DUI arrests, 17 citations and 10 warnings. The Friday-into-Saturday event involved 18 Mahoning County deputy sheriffs and three supervisors. Funding for the effort came from a state grant that targets traffic enforcement. Nearly 500 cars passed through the checkpoint, said Maj. Michael Budd. Deputies set up a command post in the Solid Rock Church parking lot near Indianola Avenue at 10 p.m. Friday and quit at 3 a.m. Saturday.
Shots fired into house
YOUNGSTOWN -- A Delaware Avenue resident told police a masked gunman fired four shots into her house, shattering the front window, about midday Friday. The person then fled in a white Concord with another masked person. There were seven people in the house at the time.
Blood drive at firehouse
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Give blood and eat like a New Castle firefighter. Tom Bulisco, president of the New Castle firefighters union, has agreed to prepare a firehouse favorite for everyone giving blood from noon to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Episcopal Church in New Castle. Firefighters are trying to aid the American Red Cross, which is in critical need of O type blood, with less than a day's supply in stock. Firefighters also are challenging other emergency response agencies, city employees and law enforcement officers to give blood, too. Blood donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh 105 pounds and be in generally good health.
Natural award
YOUNGSTOWN -- Carol Vigorito of Girard, an assistant naturalist at Mill Creek Park's Ford Nature Education Center since 1997, has received the outstanding seasonal or part-time interpreter award from the National Association for Interpretation's Great Lakes Region. Vigorito has been involved in presenting programs to school and summer camp groups, coordinating special events and managing the center's gift shop. The association consists of naturalists, historians, tour guides, educators and others working at sites, such as museums, parks, zoos and historical buildings.
Cultural alliance
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Ohio Cultural Alliance will meet at 6 p.m. May 7 at St. John Russian Orthodox Church Hall, 301 Struthers-Liberty Road, Campbell. The speaker will be Dr. Saul Friedman, professor of history and chairman of the Judaic/Holocaust Studies Program at Youngstown State University. The cost is $11 for members and $15 for nonmembers. Reservations are required by May 3 and must be mailed to Ohio Cultural Alliance, P.O. Box 561, Canfield, Ohio 44406.
UN discussion
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown chapter of the United Nations Association will be the host for a panel discussion and dinner at 6 p.m. Thursday in the YSU International Studies Center at Phelps Street and Lincoln Avenue.
The all-African panel will discuss Issues in Contemporary Africa. The program is free and will start at 7 p.m. Reservations are required for the dinner, which costs $15.
