4-H fund-raiser
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Lawrence County's 4-H charity auction is planned for 6 p.m. Saturday at the Center Banquet Facility, adjacent to North Street. Two T-shirts will be autographed by "Survivor" contestant Amber Brkich of Beaver. Also featured will be tickets to Cleveland Symphony, the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton; craft items; tools and more. A list of the items is on the Internet at http//lawrence.extension.psu.edu, and all money raised will go to Lawrence County 4-H youth programs.
Crime victims vigil
SHARON, Pa. -- The Mercer County branch of Parents of Murdered Children will have its Crime Victims' Rights Week vigil at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the municipal building, 155 Connelly Blvd. Mayor Robert T. Price will be the guest speaker.
Fatal collision
GREENE -- Larry Fry, 43, of Jamestown died in a collision on state Route 58 near Murphy Road in Mercer County at 4 a.m. Friday, the Pennsylvania State Police said. Troopers said Fry's 1985 Plymouth Voyager crossed the center line as it traveled east on state Route 58 and collided with a westbound 1999 Freightliner tractor-trailer driven by Stephen Martinez, 31, of Bronx, N.Y. Martinez suffered a minor neck injury. Fry did not use his seat belt; Martinez did. The investigation continues.
Nuclear weapons talk
MONACA, Pa. -- In observance of Earth Day, Peace Links will welcome Dr. Richard Michaels, who will talk about "Abolition of Nuclear Weapons: The Time is Now" at noon Monday in room 16 of Penn State Beaver Study Learning Center. The program is free and open to the public. Michaels is a retired pediatrician, professor emeritus of pediatrics and former chief of infectious disease at Children's Hospital and the University of Pittsburgh. He is a member of Abolition 2000: Western Pennsylvania Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons.
In a mushroom mood?
BUTLER, Pa. -- Plunge into the woods at Jennings Environmental Education Center to learn more about mushrooms. John Plischke III, walk and foray chairman at the Western Pennsylvania Mushroom Club, will talk about wild mushrooms at 1 p.m. next Sunday, then lead an optional hike throughout the park for hunting mushrooms. Blood drive at firehouse
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Give blood and eat like a New Castle firefighter. Tom Bulisco, president of the New Castle firefighters union, has agreed to prepare a firehouse favorite for everyone giving blood from noon to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Episcopal Church in New Castle. Firefighters are trying to aid the American Red Cross, which is in critical need of O type blood, with less than a day's supply in stock. Firefighters also plan to donate blood and help at the blood drive, and are challenging other emergency response agencies, city employees and law enforcement officers to give blood too. Blood donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh 105 pounds and be in generally good health.
