Baldwin-Wallace: Bryan Bartunek, a junior tennis player from Warren Harding, has won 39 of his last 40 singles matches, including 10 of 11 this season at No. 3 singles. Bartunek also has teamed with Ryan Burdick to win 46 doubles matches the last three years, including a 9-2 record this year. They have helped B-W to an 11-2 record, including a third-place 4-1 mark in the OAC. Bartunek also has a 3.6 grade-point average.Megan McGee (Warren Harding), who plays for the women's tennis team, teamed with Andrea Miller at No. 3 doubles to win two of three matches recently.Jessica Hettrick (Hubbard), a freshman on the women's golf team, placed fourth at the Malone Invitational with a 187 to help her team place second out of six teams. Freshman Julie DeChristafaro (Niles) was sixth with 201. Hettrick is averaging 101, DeChristafaro 102.3.Rich Wilson (Warren/Lordstown), a senior on the track team, placed 10th in the decathlon at a Multi-Event Meet at Millersville (Pa.) University. Wilson scored 4.780 points.
Hiram: Justine Beshara (Lowellville/Campbell Memorial), a senior outfielder for the softball team, turned in a strong performance at the plate in a doubleheader sweep of Oberlin last week. Beshara went 4-for-6 with four runs scored.Brian Frasco (Hubbard/Ursuline), a senior designated hitter and pitcher for the baseball team, was outstanding last week in three games. He went 6-for-11, driving in four runs and scoring four. He also struck out 13 batters as he pitched the Terriers to a 16-0 win over Oberlin. Frasco leads the team in hits (40), batting average (.470), triples (3), RBIs (32) and runs (32), and is tied for No. 1 in pitching wins (3) and ERA (2.25).Charles Williams (LaBrae) had a good showing against Oberlin with 5-for-10, six runs scored, three stolen bases and one RBI. Williams leads the team in stolen bases with 11.Men's track team performer Bruce Alexander (Girard) took runner-up in the long jump with 19-71/4 at the Oberlin College Meet.Nick Swetye (Salem), a freshman on the tennis team, helped the Terriers to a 9-0 win over Lake Erie College. Swetye posted a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles. Through last week, the Terriers had a 3-8 record, including 0-4 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.
John Carroll: Freshman B.J. Craig (Youngstown) had the best score at the Denison University Invitational. Craig tallied 80-73--153 as the Blue Streaks placed 14th out of 15 teams. His 73 was the eighth-best round of the second day of play.
Mount Union: Holly Friedrich (Boardman), a junior on the women's track team, won the 5,000-meter run in 19:10 at the Mount Union Invitational. Natalie Anderson (East Liverpool), a freshman, was second in the 100 in 13.05 seconds.In the men's meet, senior Nate Heddleston (Wellsville/Beaver Local) was second in the 110 hurdles in 14.83. Damon Dixon (Youngstown/East) was second in the 200 (22.68).Ryan Burke (Niles), a sophomore on the baseball team, played a role in two school records in the Purple Raiders' 21-9 win over Walsh April 12. Mount Union scored 12 runs and hit five home runs in one inning to set the school marks -- Burke accounting for one of the homers -- as the team rallied from a 9-9 tie.
Muskingum: Angie Burnside (Canfield), a sophomore pitcher, posted a 2-0 record last week, pitching 10 innings and striking out six.
Malone: Katie Lamport (Poland), a sophomore on the softball team, went 2-for-2 and scored two runs to help the Pioneers to a 4-1 win over Geneva in the nightcap of a doubleheader last Saturday. The win gave the Pioneers a 14-10 record.Jeff Jackson (Columbiana), a junior on the golf team, shot a 72-79--151 to help the Pioneers win the 28-team North Greenville (S.C.) College Invitational. Malone was ranked No. 2 in the nation in NAIA.Kelly Watt (West Branch), a junior on the women's golf team, helped her team to win the Malone Invitational last week at Tam O'Shanter in Canton. Watt fired a 91-92--183 for fourth-best on the team.Several athletes on the women's track team did well at the Mount Union College Open. Senior Megan Young (Diamond/Southeast) was a member of the winning 4x400-meter relay team. Freshman Tiffany French (Bristol) was second in the shot put (40-5), while junior Dawn Woolf (United) was third in the 100 (13.08).
Walsh: Marty Yaniglos (Hubbard), a senior member of the men's track team, has qualified for the NAIA Track and Field National Championships in the hammer throw. Yaniglos automatically gained the national spot by winning the hammer throw at the Mount Union Invitational with a throw of 164-9.Shannon Kohl (Austintown Fitch), a sophomore outfielder on the softball team, leads the American Mideast Conference in stolen bases (12-for-12). Kohl also ranks No. 3 in batting (.478) after getting four hits in a doubleheader loss to Gannon recently.
