SISTER SHIRLEY BULGER, 69 Was Humility of Mary nun, teacher



VILLA MARIA, Pa. -- Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Villa Maria Chapel for Sister Shirley Bulger, H.M., formerly Sister Marie del Rey, 69, of Villa Maria Community Center, who died Thursday at the community center.
Sister Shirley was born Jan. 7, 1932, in Niles, a daughter of John and Agnes O'Reilly Bulger.
She was an elementary and music teacher and senior housing manager in the Cleveland, Youngstown and Pittsburgh dioceses and also served as parish organist at St. Mary Church in Painesville and St. Stephen Church in Niles.
She entered the Sisters of the Humility of Mary from St. Stephen Parish in 1951, professed first vows July 17, 1953, and final vows July 17, 1956.
She graduated in 1949 from St. Mary High School in Warren and in 1964 from Nazareth College, Rochester, N.Y., with a bachelor's degree in music education.
In the Youngstown Diocese, her assignments were at Canton Central Catholic in 1954 and 1955; St. Edward School in Youngstown, 1955 to 1958 and 1965 and 1967; St. Stephen School in Niles, teacher and choir director from 1973 to 1975 and 1981 to 1985; St. Patrick School in Hubbard, 1975 to 1978; and St. Louis School, Louisville, Ohio, from 1979 to 1981.
In the Pittsburgh Diocese at Villa Maria, she was director of residential services and served on the support staff, pastoral services staff and ministry of prayer.
Among others, she leaves a sister, Agnes Wolfe of East Liverpool.
Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. today and from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Villa Maria Chapel.
