No clemency for inmate
HARRISBURG (AP) -- Gov. Tom Ridge has denied clemency for a prison inmate who informed on members of the New York mob for nearly eight years. Ridge acknowledged that Michael Lloyd helped convict figures of organized crime and probably saved the lives of federal prosecutors targeted for assassination, but he said Lloyd should not be freed because he held a knife to a prison guard during a 1983 escape, The Patriot-News of Harrisburg reported. "To give the extraordinary gift of clemency to an inmate who so violently attacked a correctional officer -- a fellow Pennsylvanian who puts on a public service uniform every day to protect his fellow citizens -- would, in my judgment, send exactly the wrong message to thousands of Pennsylvania men and women who work in this difficult and dangerous environment," Ridge wrote. Lloyd, who has a lengthy criminal history, was seeking relief from a state bank robbery sentence.
