WARREN Bowling to aid tax campaign

WARREN -- City police officers and firefighters campaigning for a proposed 0.5 percent income-tax increase will sponsor a bowling event from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday at Crest Lanes, 3390 Youngstown Road S.E.
Proceeds will go to the campaign for promoting the proposed increase, which will appear on the May 8 primary ballot.
The city's financial struggles prompted the layoff of employees and other cuts in January 2000 to head off a budget shortage.
The city has vowed to use revenue from the additional tax to bolster police and fire services.
Bowlers who buy tickets for the event will receive three games and free shoe rental.
Contacts: Tickets are $10 and can be bought from police officers and firefighters, or call Officer Geoffrey Fusco at (330) 394-3304 or firefighter Chuck Eggleston at (330) 395-5118.
"We have tried to reach target groups of voters with this campaign," Fusco said.
"We've taken special pains to remind seniors that their pensions and retirement incomes won't be affected."
He went on to say that passage of the issue will send a message to the arsonists, drug dealers and burglars "who wait to step into every gap left by a laid-off police officer or firefighter."
