Board to acquire bonds
STRUTHERS -- The board of education agreed Tuesday to acquire $46,000 in real estate acquisition bonds from Home Savings & amp; Loan Co. to buy property at 5001/2 Ninth St.
Board Treasurer Michael Evanson said a water retention basin would be built on the property to accommodate construction of an elementary building.
League invites speaker
YOUNGSTOWN -- Eugenia Atkinson, executive director of the Youngstown Metropolitan Housing Authority, will speak at Monday's meeting of the League of Women Voters of Greater Youngstown.
The meeting will be at 7 p.m. in the community room at Park Vista North, 130 Fifth Ave. The program is open to the public.
Candlelight vigil
YOUNGSTOWN -- A candlelight vigil in recognition of National Crime Victims' Rights Week will be at noon April 27 in the Mahoning County Courthouse rotunda.
The annual event is sponsored by the county prosecutor's office and the Help Hotline Crisis Center.
Attempted car theft
SALEM -- A Youngstown man is charged in Northwest Area Court with attempted car theft.
Witnesses told police that there were people acting suspiciously in the vehicle lot at Loudon Ford, 152 Continental Drive, about 2:52 a.m. Tuesday.
When police arrived, they fled, one in a car, the others on foot.
The person in the car was Timothy Davis, 42, of Truesdale Avenue, Youngstown, whom police stopped nearby.
He is charged with attempted auto theft, possession of criminal tools, criminal damaging and breaking and entering.
Two vehicles in the lot had been broken into and their steering columns were damaged.
Earth Day events
Here are Earth Day-related events around the area during the next few days:
A tire collection will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Columbiana County Highway Department, Lisbon. Slippery Rock University is host for "Engaged Compassion: A New Environmental Ethic" at 7 p.m. today in Macoskey Center. Jo Anne Stepeniak will speak. An 8:30 p.m. potluck reception will follow.
On Thursday, SRU is host for "International Car-Free Day," and there are environmental citizenship seminars from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the University Union. A lecture is set for 7 to 9 p.m. in Macoskey Center -- admission is $5. Earth Day movies will be shown from 4 p.m. to midnight in Spotts Auditorium. Students will be camping out on The Quad.
There's a mercury collection for Lawrence County residents who call the Recycling/Solid Waste Department at (724) 658-6925 by today to arrange for a free pickup of thermometers, barometers, thermostats, light switches or other items containing pure mercury.

A night hike, "Bring on the Bugs," will be at 7 p.m. Friday at McConnell's Mill State Park. Meet at Kildoo ballpark and bring a flashlight.
