Muskingum: Tami Anglin (Springfield), Erin Zupko (Liberty) and Angie Burnside (Canfield) have been factors softball team's early-season success. The trio helped the Muskies to a 22-8 record, including 7-1 in the OAC. Anglin, a junior catcher, is batting .348 (16-for-46) with 12 RBIs and seven runs scored. Zupko, a first-year left fielder, is batting .321 (18-for-56) with 13 runs scored, seven RBIs and one homer. Burnside, a sophomore pitcher, has a 9-2 record with a 1.99 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 631/3 innings.
Dan Forbes (Wellsville/Southern), a senior on the men's track team, was runner-up in the 5,000-meter run (15 minutes, 58.33 seconds) at the Wilmington Invitational, helping the Muskies place fifth out of 14 teams. Jason Kay (Canfield) also is a member of the track team. He is the son of Mr. an Mrs. Edward Kay of Canfield.
Scott Ziegler (West Branch), a first-year tennis player, posted a pair of wins at No. 6 singles. Ziegler defeated Chris Hale, 6-3, 6-3, to help the Muskies defeat Marietta, 7-0. Against Earlham, Ziegler beat Farid Moustofi, 8-6, but the Muskies were edged, 4-3. Alicia Dumovic (Salem) is a sophomore on the women's tennis team.
Lake Erie: Marcie Whitacre (Girard) was a key player for the women's basketball team last season as a sophomore. Whitacre started all 26 games and averaged 5.8 points, 3.0 assists, 2.4 steals and 2.1 rebounds, as the Storm posted an 8-17 record. She also made 22 3-point goals and shot 70 percent at the foul line. She was named to the all-tournament team at the Medaille College event that opened the season. In two games, Whitacre had 23 points, seven assists, seven rebounds and six steals. She was also named Lake Erie's student-athlete of the week. Whitacre is majoring in education and is planning to become a teacher and basketball coach.
Akron: Sandy Martin (Struthers), a sophomore on the women's basketball team, was selected as Most Improved Player. Starting 19 games, Martin averaged 6.2 points per game and ranked third on the team in rebounds with 104.
Steve Bowers (West Middlesex), a senior center-fielder, leads the baseball team in on-base percentage (.469) through 18 games. Bowers also ranked among the national leaders in stolen bases (14) while batting .323. The Zips were 4-14 overall and 1-5 in the MAC.
Maurice Taylor (Warren Harding), a sophomore defensive back, returned a pass interception 45 yards for a touchdown in the first scrimmage of spring football practice.
Malone: Ben Walters (Austintown/Rayen) was a leader on defense for the men's basketball team as a sophomore. Walters was the Pioneers' second-leading shot blocker (15) while averaging 3.1 rebounds and 2.7 points per game. He helped the Pioneers to a 16-15 record, including 10-8 in the American Mideast Conference. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Walters, Ben is majoring in secondary education.
Mount Union: Dave Benson (Poland) and Mark Prejsnar (Poland), a pair of juniors on the men's track team, posted wins recently at the Case Western Reserve Invitational. Benson won the 800-meter run in 1 minute, 58.34 seconds, while Prejsnar took the 5,000 (16:02.93). In the women's meet, junior Holly Friedrich (Boardman) won the 5,000 (19:39.62) and freshman Natalie Anderson (East Liverpool) won the 100 (13.24).
John Carroll: B.J. Craig (Youngstown), a freshman on the men's golf team, finished in a four-way tie for 29th place at the Kenyon Cup. Craig had a two-day total of 83-78--161 as the Blue Streaks placed 12th in a 15-team field.
Slippery Rock: Jeff Donatelli (Sharpsville), a freshman on the baseball team, helped the Rockets post a recent win. Donatelli hit a three-run homer in the second inning to give Slippery Rock the lead for good in a 6-2 win over Indiana (Pa.) in the nightcap of a doubleheader April 3.
Freshmen Nick Wilpulo (Mercer) and John Montgomery (New Castle/Shenango) scored wins at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational. Wilpulo won the pole vault (15-0) while Montgomery took the hammer throw (132-6 1/4).
Wooster: Brianne Diorio (Boardman/Cardinal Mooney), a freshman on the softball team, had two hits in the Scots' 5-4 loss to Carlow College in the nightcap of a doubleheader April 3. Diorio also scored two runs. Wooster was 7-12 overall and 0-2 in the North Coast Athletic Conference through April 9. She is the daughter of Mary and William Diorio.
Abby Cook (Ursuline) played in 18 games as a freshman on the women's basketball team, starting once. Cook averaged 3.8 points and 3.1 rebounds, playing 12.4 minutes per game. She also had 17 assists and 16 steals. The Scots had a 4-21 record, including 2-14 in the NCAC.
Clarion: Kristina Strojny (Cardinal Mooney) is the starting shortstop and tri-captain of the softball team in her junior season. In her third year as a starter, Strojny was batting .207 (12-for-58) with four RBIs and three runs scored through 22 games. She helped the Golden Eagles to an 11-11 record, including 2-4 in the PSAC West. Last year, Strojny hit .179 with 10 runs scored and two RBIs, and in 1999, she batted .241 with 19 hits, nine runs scored and five RBIs. The daughter of Pat and Richard Strojny, Kristina is majoring in communications.
Pittsburgh: Lindsay Hunter (Austintown Fitch) recently completed her freshman year with the gymnastics team, competing in the floor exercise for coach Debbie Yohman. Hunter's best score was a 9.775 against Western Michigan, which placed her ninth. Her next-best score was 9.750 against Penn State, also good for ninth place. Hunter's other scores were 9.675 against Michigan State, ninth; 9.625 against Kentucky, 10th; 9.625 at the EAGL Championships, 34th; 9.575 against Illinois, seventh; 9.550 against West Virginia and Brown, ninth; 9.425 against New Hampshire, ninth; 9.300 against James Madison, ninth, and 8.800 against Rutgers, 11th.
