NILES -- A McDonald man who held police at bay for nearly three hours is in jail and will return to court later this week.
Police arrested Michael E. Wran, 54, of 234 Ohio Ave., Monday morning, charging him with being a fugitive from justice and attempted arson, both felonies, and resisting arrest, a misdemeanor. Wran is in Trumbull County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bond -- $25,000 on each felony charge.
He appeared Monday in Niles Municipal Court and will return for a preliminary hearing Friday.
Police had warrant: McDonald police Detective Bill Woodley and Patrolman Nick Carney went to the Ohio Avenue home early Monday to arrest Wran on a warrant from the Whitley County Sheriff's Office, Indiana, for failing to pay child support. They called before going to the house to ensure that Wran was inside.
Police said they knocked on the front door and the lights in the house went out. When Wran didn't answer they went to the back door and smelled gas coming from the home.
Attempted-arson charge: The burners on the stove were turned on, but there were no flames, Woodley said. They looked for Wran in the basement and on the first floor before spotting matches taped to the top of a door on the second floor. The combination of the matches and the natural gas brought the attempted arson charge.
McDonald police left the house, secured the area surrounding it, turned off the gas, evacuated homes on both sides of 234 Ohio Ave. and called the Trumbull County Sheriff's Office's Tactical Response Team.
Deputy sheriffs found Wran hiding in a storage area in a bathroom on the second floor, police said, handcuffed him and escorted him out of the house and into a McDonald police car.
