McDONALD -- A village man likely will face additional charges after keeping police at bay this morning when they attempted to arrest him on charges of failing to pay child support.
Detective Bill Woodley and Patrolman Nick Carney went to 234 Ohio Ave. about 4:30 a.m. today to serve the arrest warrant on Michael Wran, 54. Wran doesn't own the two-story stucco home but was staying there, police said.
The warrant was from Indiana and accused Wran of failure to pay child support.
Carney had called the home earlier, verifying that Wran was inside, but no one came to the front door when police knocked and identified themselves as officers. The two McDonald officers, with backup from Weathersfield police, went to the house's back door.
Gas turned on: "We smelled a strong odor of gas," Carney said.
They went into the house.
"The knobs on the stove were all turned on, but there were no flames," Woodley said.
They looked for Wran in the basement and the first floor, and when they got to the second floor saw matches taped to the top of a door leading to the attic, police said.
"They were taped there so that when someone opened the door, they would light," Carney said.
The officers left the house and called Chief Alan Deluga, who decided to call the Trumbull County Sheriff's Office Tactical Response Team for assistance.
"We had secured the area so we knew he was in there," Carney said.
Found in crawl space: Several deputy sheriffs entered the home and found Wran in a crawl space. No one else was in the house, Carney and Woodley said, and Wran didn't have any weapons.
The deputy sheriffs escorted Wran from the house in handcuffs about 9:10 this morning and seated him in a McDonald police car. He was taken to the McDonald police station.
Carney and Woodley said additional charges against Wran were likely.
