SOFTBALL Palumbo tosses gem for Struthers



Her teammate, Struthers junior Loriel Singer, allowed just one hit as the Wildcats swept a doubleheader.
CAMPBELL -- Senior Tina Palumbo pitched the first no-hitter of her career and teammate junior Loriel Singer followed with a one-hitter as the Struthers High softball team blanked Campbell 9-0 and 7-0 Saturday.
Palumbo (4-2) struck out 11, while Singer (3-0) permitted just an infield single and had 11 strikeouts.
Singer and Michele Firmstone each had four hits and Laura Bell had three hits for the Wildcats (7-2).
Firmstone recorded a triple, while Holly Hickenbottom and Bell each had a double.
Campbell is 3-6.
Canfield 4-17, West Branch 2-2: BELOIT -- Canfield cranked out 24 hits and 21 runs in sweeping a doubleheader from the Warriors.
In the first game, Lindsay Gaudiose scattered five hits over seven innings while striking out five batters and walking one to get the victory. Stephanie Mistovich had two hits and Julie Playforth doubled for Canfield (6-5).
Breaking a 1-1 tie in the second inning, Amanda Williams got a leadoff hit, advanced on a hit by Mistovich, then scored on a two-out hit by Gaudiose.
In game two, four Cardinals shared 13 of Canfield's 16 hits. Gaudiose cranked out four hits, while Nicole Garrett, Trisha McHenry and Kelly Williams had three hits apiece. Williams doubled and Allison Morgan tripled for Canfield.
Poland 5, Akron Springfield 1; Poland 2, Edison 0: POLAND -- Sarah Knill and Jessie Lamport each pitched three-hitters as the Bulldogs improved to 9-1.
In the opener, Knill (7-0) limited the Spartans (6-4) to just three singles.
Poland's Emily Patton belted a bases-loaded double in the fifth to make it 2-0. Stephanie Russell also had a double for the Bulldogs.
Poland scored all its runs in the nightcap in the fifth inning, spurred by three extra-base hits.
With two out in the fifth, Lamport had a triple to make it 1-0 and Heidi Kimmel tripled her home.
Lamport (2-1) struck out 13. The Warriors are 8-4.
South Range 4, Mathews 0: VIENNA -- South Range scored three runs in the fourth inning en route to its second win in a row and sixth against five losses.
A triple by sophomore Andraea Hazel knocked in South Range's second run, while another three-bagger by Jenn Toth plated the Raiders' fourth run.
Sophomore Amy Algeo also doubled as part of South Range's six-hit attack. Toth, a junior, was the winning pitcher. The four singles she allowed were by Mathews' Brittany Parks, Jaci Bahrey, Sara Ockenfels and Mollie Belany.
Canton GlenOak 4, Fitch 3 (13); Canton GlenOak 6, Fitch 0: CANTON -- A two-out error and a single gave GlenOak its victory in the 13-inning game.
The Canton school scored on a wild pitch in the seventh inning to tie it 3-3.
In the second game, Julie Ledford of Fitch, who had three singles and five stolen bases in the first game, singled for the Falcons' only hit, in the fourth inning.
