YOUNGSTOWN -- The Catholic Diocese of Youngstown will have a prayer vigil from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday for Jay D. Scott, who is scheduled to be executed at 9 p.m., and Vinnie Prince, his victim, and their families.
The vigil will be at the Newman Center at Youngstown State University.
A letter has been sent on behalf of Catholic bishops in Ohio asking Gov. Bob Taft to commute Scott's sentence to life without parole.
Gunshot damage
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 25-year-old South Garland Avenue man called police to his East Side home around 3 a.m. Saturday after his car was damaged by gunfire. Officers said they found gunshot damage to the driver's side door and window.
Drug charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police charged Kevin W. Wiles, 20, of Loveland Avenue with four counts of drug possession and underage alcohol possession after they investigated underage drinking about 1 a.m. Saturday inside the Pulse bar on Market Street. Officers said they found 20 ecstasy tablets, three Oxycontin pills and marijuana. Police also seized about $1,000 cash.
Earlier, officers arrested two 20-year-olds and a bartender on alcohol-related charges at the nearby Jay Jay's Bar on Market Street.
Health fair
YOUNGSTOWN -- The YWCA, 25 W. Rayen Ave., will play host to the "Health is Happening" health fair from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday as part of Minority Health Month.
Clarice Perry, Youngstown State University's diversity services coordinator, will give a lecture on cultural diversity at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday. The MammoVan will provide examinations by appointment from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Accident injures man
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A Lowellville man was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital after being thrown from his motorcycle and then hit by a car.
Phillip Alfano Jr. of Jackson Street was in serious condition Saturday night at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center with unspecified injuries.
Pennsylvania State Police gave this account: Alfano was riding his motorcycle on U.S. Route 224 near Fording Road in Union Township about 11 a.m. A car in front of him stopped to turn left. The motorcycle hit the car and Alfano, who was wearing a helmet, rolled off the bike onto the berm.
A car behind him steered into the berm to avoid the wrecked vehicles and hit the motorcyclist. Alfano was trapped under the car and pulled out by township firefighters.
Rabies vaccine clinic
LISBON -- Columbiana County Health Department and Lisbon Veterinary Clinic will sponsor a reduced-cost rabies vaccination clinic for cats and dogs from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday in the county fairgrounds commercial building. Cost is $5 per pet. Dogs must be on a leash and cats must be caged.
