Driving class
NILES -- Motorists 50 and older can take a class to improve their driving skills.
The two-day class will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 2 and May 3 at Mollica's Banquet Center. AARP's 55 and Alive program offers the class, which is sponsored by the Weathersfield, Niles and Girard police departments, said Weathersfield Police Capt. Joe Consiglio.
There is a $10 fee for the class, which covers age-related physical changes, rules of the road, and license-renewal requirements.
The fee includes a luncheon on the last day, and completion certificates will be issued.
Class size is limited to 30 participants. Registration forms are available at the participating police departments. Deadline is May 1.
Sen. Ryan to speak
NILES -- State Sen. Tim Ryan of Niles, D-32nd, will be guest speaker at two Ohio universities to get the message out that state leaders need to invest in education.
On Monday, he will address students at 7 p.m. in Benton Hall at Miami University in Oxford, where he will be keynote speaker for Student Initiative Day.
Ryan will speak in the Gardner Student Center at the University of Akron at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Howland Alumni HOF
HOWLAND -- Howland Schools Alumni Education Foundation has announced it will create a Howland Alumni Hall of Fame.
Inductees will be recognized in one of two categories: life achievement or athletic achievement.

Accident injures man
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A Lowellville man was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital after being thrown from his motorcycle and then hit by a car.
Phillip Alfano Jr. of Jackson Street was in serious condition Saturday night at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center with unspecified injuries.
Pennsylvania State Police gave this account: Alfano was riding his motorcycle on U.S. Route 224 near Fording Road in Union Township about 11 a.m. A car in front of him stopped to turn left. The motorcycle hit the car and Alfano, who was wearing a helmet, rolled off the bike onto the berm.
A car behind him steered into the berm to avoid the wrecked vehicles and hit the motorcyclist. Alfano was trapped under the car and pulled out by township firefighters.
Prayer vigil
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Catholic Diocese of Youngstown will have a prayer vigil from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday for Jay D. Scott, who is scheduled to be executed at 9 p.m., and Vinnie Prince, his victim, and their families.
The vigil will be at the Newman Center at Youngstown State University.
