HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL Springfield trips Boardman in 7th



Struthers rallied, then hung on to defeat Canfield.
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Springfield High scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat Boardman 4-3 in a non-conference baseball game Thursday.
With the Spartans (9-2) leading 3-1, the Tigers (6-2) drew three walks to load the bases with none out.
Bob Zitkovic, who doubled earlier in the game, hit a ground ball to the infield but a bad throw allowed two runs to score and tied the game at 3.
An intentional walk loaded the bases, but one out later Isaac Smolko singled down the third base line to score Mike Lucicosky with the winning run.
Smolko went 3-for-4, while Kevin Gesacion and Mike Krieger each had two hits for the Spartans.
Struthers 7, Canfield 6: CANFIELD -- Trailing 6-5 in the top of the seventh, Struthers (7-1, 2-1 Metro Athletic Conference) used two singles and a double to win the game.
The Cardinals (6-5, 2-2) loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the inning, but Wildcats' pitcher Pat Watt ended the threat by starting a home-to-first double play.
Struthers' rally in the top of seventh was started with singles by John Stanko and Jason Rosenberger. John High then hit one of his two doubles, driving in both runners.
High had three hits and three RBIs. Rosenberger had three hits and two RBIs. Canfield had 14 hits, while Struthers had 13.
Campbell 13, Lowellville 3: STRUTHERS -- Juan Torres was 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs and Fred Ramos was a home run away from hitting for the cycle as Campbell Memorial scored in every inning at Cene Park.
Ramos drove in three runs and Anthony Zembilles had an RBI with two singles for Campbell.
South Range 11, McDonald 1: NORTH LIMA -- George Rohan, Tom Kimmel and Jeff Johnston each had two hits for the Raiders (6-2, 5-0 Inter-County League).
Johnston had a double and three RBIs and pitched a two-hitter.
Niles 5, Mineral Ridge 2: MINERAL RIDGE -- Niles jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, improving to 7-2.
The Red Dragons were led by Matt Brown with three singles, while Steve Mientkiewicz added a double. Stan Barton had a double and single to lead Mineral Ridge (4-4).
John Bisker (2-1) picked up the win with relief help from P.J. Rishel as the two allowed just four hits.
Hubbard 5, Newton Falls 0: HUBBARD -- Six of Hubbard's 10 hits went for extra bases as Joe O'Hara led the Eagles' attack with a triple, double and an RBI.
Besides O'Hara, Marc Barca, Dean Marshall, Garrett Cravener and Marty Kanetsky all doubled for Hubbard (3-3, 2-1 Trumbull Athletic Conference). Barca was 2-for-4 with an RBI, assisting Kevin Libeg, who got the win by striking out 14 Newton Falls batters.
Newton Falls (3-4) didn't have anyone with more than one hit, but pitcher Eric Lance doubled.
Girard 13, Badger 1: KINSMAN -- Jason Collins and Sean Petrarca each had four hits and four RBIs for the Indians (3-3, 2-2 TAC).
Vince Gentile had three hits, one a double, and three RBIs while Mike Williams had a double.
Sophomore Steven Procner (2-0) had 11 strikeouts and just one walk in six innings of work.
Kyle Harnet homered for Badger (1-4, 0-4).
Champion 15, Brookfield 4: BROOKFIELD -- Shawn Freer pitched a six-hitter and homered to lead Champion.
Stepietoski added two homers while D.J. Gross and Dye also homered for the Flashes. J.D. Ford had two of the six Brookfield hits.
Youngstown Christian 10, Rayen 6: YOUNGSTOWN -- Chris Suszynki went 3-for-3 and Eric Bader doubled for the Eagles.
The Tigers (1-4) were paced by Jamal Monroe who was 3-for-4.
West Branch 15, Minerva 2: MINERVA -- Todd Mast was 4-for-5 with three home runs and six RBIs, leading a 15-hit attack for West Branch (5-4).
Mast also scored three times for the Warriors, whose hitting attack also featured four hits for Don Close and a three-run homer for Matt Sabotka. Gary Weizenecker (2-1) picked up the win, striking out 10 while walking four and allowing only five hits.
