Seeking more officers
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Lawrence County Prison officials want to add more corrections officers to the staff to guard its expanded female section. An indoor recreation center was recently renovated to house female inmates. It opened a few weeks ago, but there aren't enough corrections officers to work in the area, said Warden William Hall. It is being staffed by part-time corrections officers and full-time officers working overtime, he said. Prison board officials agreed Wednesday to ask the county salary board to create four full-time corrections officer positions for the women's section. No salary was discussed. Hall said there were 31 women housed in the female section of the prison Wednesday, which included six from Mercer County. Before completing the new women's section, most of Lawrence County's female prisoners were housed in Cambria County.
Funds for firetruck

The department will meet that expense with $49,571 from its own funds, $57,590 from the township's truck fund and a $100,000 loan from the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency, said state Sen. Robert Robbins of Greenville, R-50th, who announced the grant award. The department's old pumper is in such bad shape it won't pass inspection, Robbins said. The department serves Springfield and a portion of Liberty Township in Mercer County and Plain Grove Township in Lawrence County.
