WARREN -- A 29-year-old woman accused of killing her newborn daughter goes on trial Sept. 17.
Judge W. Wyatt McKay of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court set the date Wednesday after Danielle Lentine waived her right to a speedy trial.
Lentine is being held in the county jail under $100,000 bond.
Atty. Anthony Consoldane of the Ohio Public Defender's Office asked Lentine to sign the time waiver to give him extra time to prepare her defense.
"If she declined to sign the time waiver the case would have had to been tried in 90 days from the date of her arrest," Consoldane said. "Since she was arrested March 23 we would have had to have a trial by June 23 and I need more time."
Consoldane is awaiting results from tests on the baby. The Trumbull County coroner's office sent the infant's remains to an expert in Washington, D.C., to determine the child's age and if it may have breathed after birth.
Background: Lentine, who has denied killing the baby, said she gave birth to the infant in early 1998 in the Howland Township home of her adoptive parents. She said the baby died a short time later.
Authorities say Lentine suffocated the baby, put her in garbage bags and hid her in a crawl space in the home. Lentine's father, Anthony, found the remains March 17.
Lentine, who has been living in Columbus since 1999, has two sons. One child lived with Lentine's parents and the other, 6 months old, lived with her and her fianc & eacute; in a YMCA shelter in Columbus.
Lentine said her fianc & eacute;'s parents, who live in Mahoning County, were granted emergency custody of that boy.
"I am glad they got the emergency custody so that they can now take care of him and take him to a doctor if he has to go," Lentine said. "I know that he is in good hands, but I just wish that I could hold him. I miss him so much."
