WARREN -- The property occupied by Cole Bros. Dodge at 3600 Youngstown-Warren Road, a property that formerly belonged to disbarred attorney Richard Goldberg of Liberty, was sold at a sheriff's auction last week to B.H.K. Properties Inc. of Warren for $650,000. Cole Bros. Dodge continues to lease the property.
Another Goldberg property B.H.K. bought at the auction was Timber Ridge Apartments, 1100 E. Liberty St., Liberty. The four-building complex sold for $1.8 million. National City Bank held the original mortgage on both properties. Goldberg pleaded guilty In 1999 to seven counts of federal mail fraud and one count of bank fraud. He is serving 41 months in federal prison.
Howland buys landto expand cemetery
HOWLAND -- Township trustees have authorized buying 1.84 acres at 1264 Niles-Cortland Road for $110,000. The land is adjacent to the Howland Township Cemetery, and township Administrator John Emanuel said the property will eventually be used to expand the cemetery.
"We are not out of space yet at the cemetery, but almost all of our plots are sold," Emanuel said.
The land to be bought is owned by James and Theresa Clapper, who live in a home on the property. Emanuel said that if the purchase goes through, the house will not be torn down immediately.
Immunizations offered free for city children
GIRARD -- Immunizations against childhood diseases will be available free for city children from birth to preschool-age at 1:30 p.m. April 26 at the health department in city hall. Dr. James J. Enyeart, city health commissioner, will conduct examinations. Parents are encouraged to pick up immunization forms at the health department from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday before the clinic. To preregister, call (330) 545-6048.
Plea in rape case
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mark A. Parker, 24, of East Ravenwood Avenue, pleaded innocent by reason of insanity Wednesday in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court, where he faces four counts of kidnapping and single counts of rape and aggravated burglary.
Prosecutors allege he raped a 15-year-old Twinsburg girl who was baby-sitting at a house near Parker's in August 2000. Three young girls, ages 7, 5 and 3, were found huddled and crying in a TV room downstairs. They told police Parker had threatened to kill them if they did not stay there.
Irish festival meeting
YOUNGSTOWN -- The committee for The Gathering of the Irish Clans will meet at 7 p.m. April 30 at Chrystal's Restaurant, 1931 Belmont Ave. Participating organizations will finalize the entertainment schedule and menu for the Irish festival, which will be in August. WRTA promotion
YOUNGSTOWN -- Western Reserve Transit Authority will begin a campaign in June to highlight its positive effect in the community and its commitment to riders.
"The tag line 'People on the Move' promotes the positive message of WRTA and communicates to the riders who count on WRTA to provide them with local, moderately priced transportation," said John Van Fossan, president of Van Fossan & amp; Associates, which developed the campaign. The tag line will be used in billboard and radio advertising and on signs on buses.
WRTA also is holding a drawing that will award free WRTA transit service to one rider for a year.
Riders have until June 2 to enter. Entry forms are available at WRTA's main terminal. Riders may also send name, address and telephone number on a stamped postcard to WRTA Contest, 604 Mahoning Ave., Youngstown 44502.
2 appointed to panel
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Neshannock Township supervisors appointed Robert Delsignore and William Stroia on Wednesday to the township park commission, which oversees activities at the township park and Hess Ice Arena. Both are to serve five-year terms, and are replacing Beverly Lombardi and Justine Kearney, who chose not to seek reappointment for personal reasons.
