Warren school district allows baseball league to use its fields
The district also agreed to rent Lincoln Park.
WARREN -- City school officials are paving the way to make sure some area youths have a chance to play baseball this summer.
The board of education approved a measure Tuesday to allow Warren United Baseball League to use fields at Lincoln Park and Warren G. Harding High School for summer competition.
Athletics director Paul Trina said the league is made up of boys between 13 and 17.
The city closed its parks in January 2000 because of budget cuts.
Compromise: City officials, area baseball league representatives and city union officials met last week and reached a compromise to open Burbank Park for recreational play.
About 39 baseball and softball teams have begun practicing there for the season, which begins in May.
Burbank will be open to youths between 6 and 15 who play for Burbank Baseball League and Warren Baseball League.
Burbank, off Tod Avenue N.W., will be the only city park open for summer competition. Packard Park will be open, but fields will not be maintained.
Renting park: Lincoln Park is operated by the school district, which also agreed Tuesday to rent the park to John F. Kennedy High School for softball competition.
Trina said JFK will pay $15 every time it uses the field, and 30 percent, or roughly $180, of the district's cost to maintain fields for the summer.
"It's not the perfect situation, but we're doing what we have to service our kids," Trina said.
The board also accepted the resignation of Robert Rose, a teacher at Harding High School.
