PREP BASEBALL Mooney shuts out Canfield, 2-0



Salem, Struthers, Niles and Boardman also were winners.
STRUTHERS -- Jordan Rogers scattered four hits as Mooney High's baseball team blanked Canfield 2-0 Tuesday at Cene Park.
Mooney executed a triple play in the first inning. With runners on first and second, Dan Cashan caught a line shot at first, tagged the runner coming back and threw to second.
Mooney (3-4) got two runs in the bottom of the first as Jonathan Zizzo doubled, stole third and scored on a single by Rogers.
With two outs, Dave Pavlich walked, stole second and scored on a single by Mike Kohowski.
Salem 2, East Palestine 0: SALEM -- Freshman third baseman Landon Heath singled in Jake Conrad in the fourth inning for the Quakers.
Judd Crowgey singled in E.J. Boron, who had walked, to propel Salem (4-4). Mike Pendergast got the win for the Quakers, while Ryan Hanolt took the loss for East Palestine (2-4), which got a double from Travis Bicella.
Struthers 6, Liberty 1: STRUTHERS -- The Wildcats' Jason Rosenberger scored from first on a fourth-inning double by John Stanko to break a 1-1 tie, and Struthers (6-0) went on to score four more times.
Pat Watt had two singles and Bob Benson doubled with two RBIs. Rosenberger got the victory, striking out nine with no walks and giving up only two hits.
Niles 5, Champion 2: CHAMPION -- Matt Baritell, Kyle Barker and Matt Brown each had two hits for the Red Dragons, who broke open a scoreless game with four runs in the third inning.
Igniting the Niles' third, P.J. Rishel singled with Rocco Cickelli and Lou Viglio on base, driving in a run. Singles by Baritell and Barker and a double by Brown each produced a run. Kiff Kinkead had a double for Champion.
Boardman 11, Chaney 2: BOARDMAN -- Four Spartans pitchers combined to strike out 13 Chaney batters, allowing just Mike DeNiro and John Campbell to reach base on singles.
Boardman (7-1), which scored five times in the first inning, had 10 hits, with Mike Krieger, Chris King and Rick Mosco each having two. King doubled and drove in four runs.
Jake Kocanyar took the loss for Chaney (2-4).
Warren JFK 5, Jackson-Milton 3: WARREN -- Warren JFK (4-1) rallied for three runs in the fifth inning for the victory.
Kevin Costello singled and Paul Lepro walked. Nelson Thomas homered.
