FARRELL-- The school district is seeking a $77,062 federal grant to make health and safety improvements in its preschool program.
The money is a supplemental funding program offered for the 2001-2002 school year. It's a one-time grant. The process is competitive, and there's no guarantee Farrell will get any money.
The school board approved filing an application for the grant Monday.
Terri Lengyel, preschool director, said the money would be used for increased transportation requirements such as bus monitors and safety seats, hepatitis shots for the preschool staff, a new phone system at the Hetra Early Childhood Center, playground improvements and children's books.
Other business: The board also voted to seek bids for replacing the maintenance building roof, but delayed action on replacing the cinder track around the high school football field with a paved surface.
The roof has had serious leaks. When it rains, buckets are used to catch dripping water, said Superintendent Richard Rubano.
The Sharon architectural firm of HHSDR has drawn up plans for replacing the roof and estimates the cost could be as high as $24,000. School directors felt they could handle that expense but improvements to the football stadium may have to wait.
HHSDR estimated the cost of replacing the track and doing some additional resurfacing and paving around the fieldhouse and concession stand areas at $85,000 to $95,000.
