E. LUCILE FREY, 97 Was biology professor at Westminster
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Smith Funeral Home, New Wilmington, for E. Lucile Frey, 97, of Shenango Presbyterian Home, who died after a long illness.
Mrs. Frey was born Aug. 23, 1903, in Fayette County, Pa., a daughter of Charles W. and Della Thomas Beerbower.
A 1921 graduate of Uniontown High School, she attended Geneva College in Beaver Falls and received a bachelor's degree in biology in 1926, graduating magna cum laude from Westminster College. She received a master's degree in biology from the University of Michigan in 1932 and took graduate biology courses from the University of Pittsburgh.
She taught at Poverty Point, a one-room schoolhouse in Lawrence County, in 1922 and 1923 and at New Wilmington High School from 1926 to 1930, and was a research assistant in genetics at the University of Michigan in 1932 and 1933. She was a substitute biology teacher at Ambridge High School in Pennsylvania for two years, house director of Browne Hall at Westminster from 1934 to 1938, assistant professor of biology at Westminster from 1947 to 1970, and chairman of its biology department.
She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Lambda Chapter; Pennsylvania Academy of Science; New Wilmington Garden Club; and National Retired Teachers Association. She also was a member and secretary of Thursday Club of New Wilmington, and was an assistant judge for the Junior Academy of Science for many years.
Mrs. Frey received the alumni achievement award from Westminster College in 1974 and was a member of Westminster College President's Club and an assistant professor emerita. Holcad, the Westminster College yearbook, was dedicated to her in 1957, and she was named an honorary Titan in 1973. She received the Alumni Achievement Citation for service to Westminster College in 1983 and an honorary doctorate degree in science from the college in 1989.
She was a member of the church and its Monroe Bible Class and was a former Sunday school teacher there.
Her husband, Nathan K., whom she married June 25, 1938, died May 18, 1994.
She leaves several nieces and nephews. A sister, Eleanor Beerbower Skellie, is deceased.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. April 22 in Neshannock Presbyterian Church here. Contributions may be made to the Nathan & amp; Lucile Frey Scholarship Fund, in care of Westminster College, New Wilmington 16172.
