Break-in investigated
LAKE MILTON -- Township police are investigating an April 4 home invasion in the 13500 block of Gladstone Road in which a man and his wife were forced to open a safe and were injured. A large amount of cash and jewelry were taken.
The suspects may be driving a blue older model car with a loud exhaust and no front license plate.
A motorist who may have passed the car on Gladstone about 8:30 p.m. that night is urged to call Chief William Moretz or Detective Sgt. Ken Kovalchik at (330) 538-0078 or the county sheriff dispatcher at (330) 740-2370.
The suspects are both white men in their late 20s or early 30s. One is 6 foot 1 inch, 200 pounds, with dark brown shoulder-length hair and a thick neck. The other is 5 foot 9 inches and 140 to 160 pounds, with light brown hair and wearing a black leather jacket with gold triangles on the sleeves.
State hires local firm
COLUMBUS -- The state has hired Steel Valley Engineering Inc. of Youngstown for architectural services for a Stambaugh Auditorium improvement project. The State Controlling Board released $58,262 and waived competitive bidding for the contract.
Steel Valley Engineering will provide construction documents for the installation of a sound system and boilers and an acoustics study.
State officials say Steel Valley is a local firm and has a background in theater design and restoration. The project is estimated at $500,000.
Pulling plug on party
CANFIELD -- Police stopped a party in a North Broad Street garage Sunday evening, citing an 18-year-old for underage consumption of alcohol. When police arrived, three teen-agers were in the garage, playing with an electric guitar. Four more young men, all 17 or 18, showed up while police were there, reports say. Officers confiscated 24 beers and a cooler, reports say.
Search leads to charges
CANFIELD -- A Boardman resident was arrested on charges of speeding, possession of a fake ID and carrying concealed weapons after a police search of his car uncovered four knives hidden in three compartments. The 20-year-old was pulled over on state Route 46 at 2:30 a.m. Saturday after an officer observed him speeding, reports say. The officer noticed marijuana stems and seeds on the car floor and in the driver's back pocket found a fake ID, which he said he used to get into bars, reports say. Police also found a small bag of marijuana on his passenger, a Youngstown 17-year-old, who was cited for delinquency for possessing the drug.
Funds for state park
COLUMBUS -- More than $2.3 million has been freed for improvements to West Branch State Park.
The State Controlling Board said the money will fund construction of two restroom/shower facilities, new waterlines, a rechlorination facility and a sewage system.
New electric service is also to be installed at 51 sites throughout the park. The Department of Natural Resources says all work is to be done by November.
The state has already spent $661,176 on design work and other preconstruction costs.
Thieves steal tractor
AUSTINTOWN -- Thieves cut down a 20-foot section of fence to get into Cerni Motors Inc., 5751 Cerni Place, and stole a 1996 International tractor with a 22-foot van box, reports say. The thieves also stole 18 wheels and tires off three new trucks, reports say. The theft was discovered Monday morning.
Meeting changed
VIENNA -- The Mathews Board of Education will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday instead of the April 18 meeting it had originally scheduled.
