YOUNGSTOWN Workshop focuses on adult literacy

YOUNGSTOWN -- A local literacy education project is planning to have a training workshop for volunteers interested in teaching adults how to read.
The three-part workshop, sponsored by Project Opportunity, is designed to educate volunteers how to use literacy education materials.
A volunteer who completes the workshop and participates in Project Opportunity will spend up to three hours each week teaching an adult how to read.
Volunteers needed: Rosann Proscnjak, Project Opportunity matchmaker, said her program is in need of about 25 new literacy education volunteers.
About 60 adult students and 45 teaching volunteers are participating in the project, she said.
"A lot of our volunteers have doubled up on these students," she said, adding that 15 potential students have been placed on a waiting list until new volunteers can be trained.
Proscnjak said that many of the students want to learn how to read so they can pursue a job or a college degree. She also noted that both the students and the volunteers benefit from the project.
"Just helping another person over this obstacle, it gives them a good feeling," she said of the volunteers.
Details: The first session of the training workshop will be from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. April 28 at the post office on Walnut Street in Youngstown.
The second training session will be from 5 to 8 p.m. April 30 at the post office, which also will be the site of the third session from 5 to 8 p.m. May 2.
Reservations: The workshop is free to attend, but reservations are required.
To reserve a place in the workshop call the Project Opportunity office at (330) 747-7555 between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Wednesdays or Fridays.
