Penn State alumni
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) -- For the fourth straight year, Penn State has had more alumni donate money than any other school in the country.
While former Penn Staters didn't give more money than those of several other schools, the state's largest university had more alumni donors than No. 2 Harvard and No. 3 Michigan, according to preliminary data from the New York-based Council for Aid to Education. Penn State had 71,423 donors, and Harvard had 66,138, according to the council. It total, they gave $50.7 million to Penn State in the fiscal year ending June 30, 2000.
The donations are a long way from 1983, when Penn State's endowment stood at about $38 million. In June, its endowment hit $1 billion, making it one of 48 universities with 10-figure or larger endowments, according to the Council for Aid to Education.
A bird in the way
NORTH EAST, Pa. (AP) -- Developers of a proposed $5.1 million racetrack in Erie County said they hope a rare bird doesn't delay their project.
Officials from the state's Department of Environmental Protection said there is some evidence that shows the upland sandpiper is nesting at the proposed construction site of the Lake Erie Speedway.
The bird is a threatened species, so if it is in the area, track developers would not be allowed to disturb the site until after the birds' nesting season is over in August, officials from the Pennsylvania Game Commission said.
Todd Melfi, general manager of Lake Erie Promotions, the track developer, said the construction delay could postpone the speedway's opening until May 2002.
Construction of the track, which would be used for racing, concerts, monster truck shows and other events, was to begin this month, Melfi said.
The commission and the track's developers will determine if the upland sandpiper is nesting at the site, said Tony Ross of the Game Commission.
